SUMMARY:Finding the Balance: Learning spaces that promote rigour and kindness
DESCRIPTION:Full Schedule9am-10am: Light breakfast and networking (outside Myhal 150) 10:10am-10:15am: Opening remarks from Vice-President and Provost\, Trevor Young (Myhal 150) 10:15am-12pm: Finding the Balance: Learning spaces that promote rigour and kindness\, Garfield Gini-Newman\, Associate Professor\, Curriculum\, Teaching and Learning\, OISE Finding the Balance: Learning spaces to promote rigour and kindnessFacilitator: Garfield Gini-Newman\, Associate Professor\, Curriculum\, Teaching and Learning\, OISE As the world undergoes transformational change and societies deal with polycrisis:• How can we best ensure that university classrooms are bastions of civil discourse and learning spaces where curiosity is nurtured\, and intellectual growth promoted?• When considering three pedagogical facets of university education: core learning goals/purposes; sources of evidence of learning; and\, instructional practices\, how much has changed?• What should change and what constants are important?• Do university classrooms need to undergo revolutionary change or an evolution in practices?• What are the opportunities and challenges presented by the increasing presence of AI in our world?During this session\, Garfield will explore the possibilities and challenges of responding to teaching and learning in a rapidly shifting world. Participants will consider and respond to a variety pedagogical issues and ideas to find ways to embrace change so that learning in university classrooms balances kindness and rigour\, curiosity and deep learning\, collaboration and individuality so that students can flourish in their university career and beyond.• Can the inversion of traditional structures help to promote richer discourse\, deeper learning\, and better opportunities for meaningful assessment to occur? Consider the impact on university classrooms if the assignments given to students were used as invitations to learn rather than proof of learning. If they were used to initiate and sustain learning rather than testing for learning at the end.• What if we focused on problem managing over problem solving? What might course design and classroom instruction look like framed around a problem management approach? Imagine the opportunities if we valued the journey as much as the product\, and if we expanded the sources of evidence gathered to reflect the range of ways students will engage in the world after graduation.Part of CTSI’s Teaching and Learning Symposium: Mini-Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-and-learning-symposium-mini-series/)  \nCoffee and Networking at 9am Join us before Finding the Balance for an opportunity to meet with colleagues and connect in-person.  Learn more about U of T teaching awards and grants with the Office of Vice-Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate Education\, ask questions President’s Teaching Award\, Learning and Education Advancement Fund (and LEAF+)\, Northrop Frye Award\, or Graduate Education Innovation Fund and meet past recipients.  Participate in an Engaging Interactive Display with What is a Classroom Standard?: The Build Your Own Edition • Have you ever wanted to design your own classroom? • What are those elements in a physical classroom that are essential to your pedagogy? • What is missing in the current inventory of classrooms? • What would optimize your engagement with your students? Transforming the Instructional Landscape Advisory Committee\, Learning Space Management\, and members of the Tech2U team will be in attendance to design your wish list classroom. SUMMARY:SoTL Summer Series: Learning Analytics and SoTL (Part III)
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSI Presenters: Alan da Silveira Fleck\, Data Analyst\, Learning Analytics\, Office of the Vice-Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate EducationTingting Zhu\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, GIS Program Director\, Geography\, Geomatics and Environment\, UTMNaomi Levy-Strumpf\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Human Biology Program This session addresses an emergent area that utilizes learning analytics as one source of data for a scholarship of teaching and learning study. Alan da Silveira Fleck and Tingting Zhu will share highlights from their recently published article that focuses on online asynchronous discussion (OAD) and using Quercus log files and student quiz scores to assess the effectiveness of that engagement approach. Naomi Levy-Strumpf will share findings from her project as a participant in the Data Driven Design – Quercus Analytics (D3:QA) cohort where she focused on New Analytics Course Activity Report on the course’s Quercus page to gather information on the number of views and timing of access to course lecture notes and the study guide. A key finding is that accessing the course study guide may be a key resource related to higher quiz scores. Students who accessed this resource in advance had a better performance compared to those who accessed the material closer to the deadline. Naomi also used Quercus Analytics to identify gaps and intervene strategically to promote mastery of concepts and impact student success within the time frame of a single semester. This session is open to instructors of all scholarship of teaching and learning experience levels and any instructor or staff with an interest in gaining more information about learning analytics. This event is Part III of the CTSI SoTL Summer Series that showcases our U of T instructors’ participation in SoTL conferences\, the 2023-24 CTSI SoTL Writing Cohort\, in SoTL and Learning Analytics initiatives and in some cases recent publications flowing from these activities. The presentation topics are diverse and fall within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER) in higher education. All presentations address presenters’ efforts to understand ways to enhance student learning and employ theoretical frameworks and systemic inquiry to meet these goals. Presenters will share their research goals/questions\, research design\, methods and core findings. There will be time set aside for a Q&A. Participants are welcome from all SoTL experience levels.

SUMMARY:Tune into Teaching: Plagiarism Detection: Switching from Ouriginal to Turnitin
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Jordan Holmes\, Senior Manager\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSI/ARCDerek Hunt\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSI/ARCMarko Piljevic\, Faculty Liaison\, Technology\, CTSI/ARC  The University of Toronto is transitioning its plagiarism detection tool from Ouriginal to Turnitin\, effective September 1\, 2024. This change is necessary because Turnitin has acquired Ouriginal and will no longer be developing or supporting the Ouriginal platform (refer to CTSI’s Plagiarism Detection page (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/resources/plagiarism-detection/) for more information). In this session we will guide you through the process of switching from Ouriginal to Turnitin\, demonstrating its features and functionalities\, and showing how it is available to be integrated into your Quercus course assignments. The session will also walk through how to interpret the similarity report generated by Turnitin. We will provide a demonstration to explain the nuances of the similarity report\, helping you understand how to interpret the results and take appropriate action. By the end of this session\, you will be equipped with the knowledge and resources to successfully switch from Ouriginal to Turnitin and use it effectively in your Quercus course for plagiarism detection.

SUMMARY:Tune into Teaching: Approaching Academic Integrity in the Age of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Jordan Holmes\, Senior Manager\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSI/ARCVictoria Sheldon\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Generative AI Pedagogies\, CTSI The use of generative AI is likely to become a defining feature of education in the coming decades. However\, its rapid emergence presents significant ethical and academic challenges\, especially concerning academic integrity. Educators now face a critical decision: attempt to ban generative AI outright or find a way to integrate it while maintaining academic standards and student skill development. Given AI’s rapid progress and the limitations of text detection tools\, how can we strike the right balance? In this collaborative workshop\, we invite educators to reflect on their perspectives\, questions\, and approaches to academic integrity in the age of generative AI. First\, we will discuss university guidelines on using detection tools\, the procedure for addressing concerns of students’ unauthorized use of generative AI\, and strategies to prohibit and prevent its use. Second\, we will critically examine frameworks for incorporating generative AI into assessments\, collaboratively exploring how instructors can design evaluations that foster knowledge and skill development\, enhance AI literacy\, and promote ethical decision-making. Third\, we will discuss the disciplinary implications and challenges of integrating generative AI into assessments while promoting academic integrity.  Join us in this conversation as we collectively navigate generative AI’s impact on academic integrity\, carefully weighing its advantages against the need to maintain ethical standards.  Learning Objectives:  By the end of this session\, participants will be able to:  • Reflect on the impact of generative AI on how instructors and students classify and grapple with academic integrity violations. • Explore and critically assess frameworks for integrating generative AI in assessments while maintaining academic integrity.• Engage in reflective dialogue concerning the ethical implications of using AI tools in assessments\, considering both student and educator viewpoints. • Critically examine how generative AI impacts specific academic disciplines and professional fields. A part of CTSI’s Tune into Teaching Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/t2t/)
