SUMMARY:Demystifying the Dossier: Preparing Your Teaching Dossier
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSI\, Samantha Chang\, Faculty Liaison\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSIAt the University of Toronto\, a teaching dossier must be submitted as part of the formal review process for tenure and continuing status. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership. This session focuses on an overview of the content and overall structure of an effective teaching dossier. Participants will develop a plan for assembling and strengthening their own dossiers and be guided in how to use a narrative throughout their dossier to connect and create coherence between multiple sections and sources of evidence. Participants in this workshop will: • Engage with their own Divisional Guidelines on Teaching Effectiveness to map out key criteria \n• Identify the key elements of their dossier and artifacts for inclusion \n• Assess alignment between their teaching claims and evidence\, and identify effective ways to frame evidence \n• Plan steps for editing their developing narrative and preparing their final document.Participants will be provided a digital workbook prior to the webinar and this document will form the basis of the session activities. Please note that this webinar will focus on the preparation of a teaching dossier by appointed faculty members for the purposes of undergoing a review process (tenure or continuing status). Teaching dossiers prepared for job searches carry different expectations and will not be the focus of this session.Optional pre-webinar work:We recommend that participants attend the Drafting Your Statement of Teaching Philosophy webinar (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/4142). SUMMARY:Monitor-Side Chats: Explore proposed updates to UDL Guidelines 3.0
DESCRIPTION:Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (https://udlguidelines.cast.org/) is a framework for minimizing barriers and fostering purposeful\, motivated\, resourceful\, knowledgeable\, strategic\, and goal-oriented learners. UDL offers various guidelines for providing multiple means of engagement\, representation\, and action and expression. UDL is an iterative and reflective process and CTSI is here to help! \nJoin CTSI staff and U of T instructors on April 12 for an informal monitor-side (in-person and online) chat about the proposed updates for UDL Guidelines 3.0. In preparation for the chat\, review the Summary of Proposed Updates (https://www.cast.org/impact/summary-of-proposed-updates-for-udl-guidelines-3.0) and the Graphic Organizer Draft (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nIh1b4c2i9a95g6zPjmQOXfIjwTbGuEFgljAimM0jfw/edit?usp=sharing).New to UDL? Watch the 5-minute “UDL at a Glance” video (https://youtu.be/bDvKnY0g6e4?si=jhwJwVPc_QVbBqgK) created by CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology). This monitor-side chat is a bonus session of the nine-session series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/monitor-side-chats-udl-ing-in-winter-2024/) occurring weekly on Fridays between January 26 and March 22. Chat soon!

SUMMARY:Empowering Chinese International Students to Overcome Initial Barriers: Leveraging insights from Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:  \nElaine Khoo\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Coordinator\, English Language Development Support\, Centre for Teaching and Learning\, UTSC Xiangying Huo\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Center for Teaching and Learning\, UTSC  \nRecognizing that linguistically and culturally diverse English Language Learners are greatly disadvantaged when they are constantly being measured against Western academic writing norms\, it is important to address the inequity of learning conditions that they face at university. \nThis workshop aims to shift perspectives and challenge practices that may have been inadvertently related to deficit thinking and negative stereotypes about Chinese international students. Given the changing demographics and backgrounds of these students\, let us explore how we could make small changes in our teaching and evaluation methods in order to optimize the benefits these students bring to their courses and learning communities. With an introduction to key elements of culturally responsive pedagogy\, participants will explore actionable strategies for dismantling stereotypes for students across a range of different cultures\, fostering an educational environment that celebrates diversity\, enhances mutual learning\, and establishes a richer and more inclusive academic experience for all.

SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn Series: Supporting Student Academic Skill Development
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Jaimal Thind\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Mathematical and Computational Sciences\, UTM \nWhen we design our courses\, we invest a lot of effort and resources into planning what we want our students to learn (i.e. the learning objectives)\, how to deliver that content in class\, and how to create assessments that will help students develop and demonstrate their understanding of the material. Sometimes we take for granted that our students will be able to effectively use course materials and their time in class. We may not ask ourselves\, or\, just as importantly\, our students\, if there are gaps in their academic skills that might create barriers to their success (e.g.\, do they know how to take effective notes during class?).In this session\, participants will explore examples of resources that were part of the ACUE course that targeted note-taking skills. Participants will learn how these tools were built upon to support note-taking in an active learning context and will explore additional tools developed to support disciplinary reading and writing skills\, including some data collected that indicates their effectiveness. There will also be time for discussion about skill development strategies in a variety of contexts and disciplines. \nOur faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI. \nLearn more about the ACUE Lunch and Learn Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/acue-lunch-and-learn/)

SUMMARY:CTSI Equity Roundtable - The Equitable Classroom is a Therapeutic Landscape: Leveraging the Meaning of Mindful Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Leanne De Souza-Kenney\, Assistant Professor\, Human Biology\, FASJasjit Sangha\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSI \nIn this session\, we will explore the utility of mindful meditation in the pursuit of building an equitable classroom for educators and learners. The classroom can be a therapeutic landscape where educators and learners take part in deep learning and meaning making. In the fast-paced\, high-stress\, high-achieving environment of higher ed\, that is compounded by demanding expectations and global challenges\, a simple practice of meditation holds potential for authentic\, sustainable pedagogies and contributions. In this session\, participants will reflect on ideas related to the following questions: What makes a classroom equitable? How do we find  purpose and meaning at the intersection of our personal and professional pursuits? How can the classroom be a place to generate both personal fulfilment and professional productivity? Why should we practice and model mindful meditation in higher education?
