SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn - Using your syllabus as a roadmap to learning: Strategies to enable reflection and engagement
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Lydia Wilkinson\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Engineering Communication Program (ECP)\, Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP)\, FASEYour course syllabus is an important tool for communicating expectations\, including learning outcomes\, course structure and assignment design. Yet while we often invest significant energy in creating our syllabi and spend time in the first weeks of class reviewing these\, it is easy to overlook their value as a learning tool throughout the rest of the semester. Like any good teaching tool\, a course syllabus presents an opportunity to check-in with our students\, to align our expectations and help them understand how they are learning what they are learning. This lunch and learn session takes as its starting point the ACUE module on “Preparing an Effective Syllabus”\, and shares strategies on how a well-designed syllabus can be used as a touchpoint to enable student goalsetting and assessment from the beginning of the semester to completion of the course. Specifically\, we will review approaches to developing a graphical syllabus that can work as a roadmap for students\, learn about goalsetting activities that will help students locate course learning outcomes and apply these to their learning outside the classroom\, and discuss ways to use the syllabus to reflect on success in achieving these learning outcomes throughout the semester. Our faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI.Learn more about the ACUE Lunch and Learn Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/acue-lunch-and-learn/)

SUMMARY:Monitor-Side Chats: UDL-ing in Winter 2024: UDL Guideline 7: Recruiting interest (accessing engagement)
DESCRIPTION:Discussions about practical applications and concrete strategies of Universal Design for LearningFor January 26th session: learn more about UDL Guideline #7: Provide Options for Recruiting Interest (https://udlguidelines.cast.org/engagement/recruiting-interest) \nThe average student does not exist. So\, how do we design learning environments that maximize learning for all students?Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (https://udlguidelines.cast.org/) is a framework for minimizing barriers and fostering purposeful\, motivated\, resourceful\, knowledgeable\, strategic\, and goal-oriented learners. UDL offers various guidelines for providing multiple means of engagement\, representation\, and action and expression. UDL is an iterative and reflective process and CTSI is here to help!Join CTSI staff and U of T instructors in Winter 2024 for informal monitor-side (in-person and online) chats about implementing UDL in your teaching (i.e.\, UDL-ing your course). We will examine each UDL guideline and checkpoint and discuss practical strategies to help students access\, build\, and internalize learning.New to UDL? Watch the 5-minute “UDL at a Glance” video (https://youtu.be/bDvKnY0g6e4?si=jhwJwVPc_QVbBqgK) created by CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology). This monitor-side chat is one of nine in a series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/monitor-side-chats-udl-ing-in-winter-2024/) occurring weekly on Fridays between January 26 and March 22. Chat soon!

SUMMARY:Equity and UDL: Centering the Learner and Fostering Academic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Samantha Chang\, Faculty Liaison\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSIJasjit Sangha\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSI Michal Kasprzak\, Assistant Director\, CTSI/TATPThe Ontario Postsecondary Education Standards Development Committee (2022) and the Ontario Human Rights Commission (2018) identify Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as an approach to engage all students and provide an equal opportunity to succeed. Developed by the Centre for Applied Special Technology (CAST)\, the UDL framework guides and optimizes the design and implementation of learning outcomes\, assessments\, and learning activities and materials to make learning inclusive\, accessible\, and usable for all learners. While UDL is grounded in neuroscience\, this session examines the intersection between equity\, diversity\, and inclusion principles and UDL and its impact on student learning and academic resilience.Learning Outcomes:• Examine the UDL framework and its adaptability to diverse teaching and learning contexts \n• Investigate the intersection of EDI principles and UDL guidelines for enhancing student belonging\, learning\, and academic resilience \n• Discuss EDI- and UDL-informed strategies for cultivating expert learners who are purposeful\, motivated\, resourceful\, knowledgeable\, strategic\, and goal-directed
