SUMMARY:Inclusive Languages and Communication in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:Jasjit Sangha\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSISamantha Chang\, Faculty Liaison\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSIYaseen Ali\, Learning Strategist\, Academic SuccessU of T students come from 170 countries and regions (U of T Quick Facts\, 2022)\, with 32% speaking a language other than English at home (Student Life\, 2023). How can we leverage diverse language skills to cultivate inclusive learning environments and foster belonging? This session examines the intersection between languages and communication with accessibility\, intercultural competencies\, and asset-based pedagogies. In doing so\, we consider the power of languages and communication in reconstructing learning spaces and identities and identify strategies to remove barriers and foster belonging in our culturally and linguistically diverse community. Learning Outcomes:• Examine key principles and approaches of inclusive languages and communication informing pedagogies and practices in the classroom• Investigate language and communication strategies for removing barriers\, empowering learners\, and amplifying learning in your courses• Discuss how inclusive languages and communication can align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and reinforce ongoing work in anti-racist/anti-oppressive education.

SUMMARY:From Panic to Possibility: Rethinking and Redesigning Assignments in the Wake of Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Alison Gibbs\, Professor\, Teaching Stream Department of Statistical Sciences\, Director\, CTSI Andrea Williams\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream Writing & Rhetoric\, Innis College\, Deputy Director\, CTSI \nAs an instructor\, it is hard to read about the impact of generative AI on teaching and learning in higher education and not wonder about how this will impact our traditional assessments\, especially when we are told that many of our students are already using it. This workshop will help move you from panic mode to problem-solving: in consultation with workshop leaders and faculty peers\, you will get a chance to rethink and redesign one of your assignments with a focus on learning objectives\, possibilities\, and constraints in our current context. \nNote: This workshop was also offered on August 17\, 2023
