SUMMARY:Community-Engaged Learning Faculty Institute\, No More Smoke and Mirrors: Publicly Engaged Scholarship in 21st Century Academe – Beware the Shrinking Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Centre for Community Partnerships Join us for Professor Timothy K. Eatman’s keynote address\, No More Smoke and Mirrors: Publicly Engaged Scholarship in 21st Century Academe – Beware the Shrinking Imagination. Community-engaged learning (CEL) can serve a powerful role through academe in navigating the most pressing issues of our time. It can push us to be more thoughtful about knowledge creation and its sundry sources. It challenges us to acknowledge community based and Indigenous expertise in ways that do not typically register in higher education. Evidence suggests that community-engagement is a high impact practice\, when conducted in a constructively critical manner\, makes the education experience better and more robust\, for faculty as well as students. Yet\, academe has some work to do in order to achieve these aims. Pivoting on the principles of publicly engaged scholarship\, full participation and the work of imagining as frameworks for social amelioration\, Dr. Tim Eatman challenges attendees to reconcile weaknesses within traditional approaches\, within a liberal arts context\, and to activate community-engagement with a sense of prophetic imagination. Professor Eatman\, an educational sociologist and publicly engaged scholar\, serves as the Inaugural Dean of the Honors Living – Learning Community and Professor of Urban Education at Rutgers University-Newark.All instructors\, staff\, students\, community partners and the public are welcome to join the virtual event. This event will be recorded.REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:EdTech Workshop 2023: CTRL +shift
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering \n\n\n\nThe EdTech Workshop 2023 is back in person on May 17\, 2023 in the Myhal Centre! \n\n\n\nEvent Details: Hosted by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering\, the EdTech Workshop 2023: CTRL +shift is a one-day\, in person event featuring informal sessions (demonstrations\, case studies\, panels\, etc.) led by instructors and staff from across the three U of T campuses.  This year’s theme\, CTRL +Shift\, is a play on using the modifier keys on a standard keyboard (sorry Mac users\, these are Windows shortcuts). For example\, if you used CTRL +Shift + v\, then you can paste without any formatting\, keeping only the text (removing the extraneous and keeping what you need). If you used Ctrl + Shift + N\, you could create a new folder to store files (a digital place for new ideas). The EdTech Workshop 2023 provides a space and place to discuss identifying your own essentials\, how/if your values have “shifted” (the theme has metaphorical and literal aspects)\, and how to achieve them effectively and efficiently. \n\n\n\nEvent Logistics: Attendees will register for the event in the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship and enjoy a continental breakfast. We’ll begin with a welcome from Prof. Tom Coyle\, Vice Dean\, Undergraduate\, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE). Our two keynotes will be delivered back-to-back in MY50: Prof. Susan McCahan\, Vice-Provost\, Academic Programs and Vice-Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate Education\, followed by Dr. Nidhi Sachdeva.  \n\n\n\nAfter the keynotes\, attendees can then self-select between sessions (see the event website for more details about the session leaders and sessions). There’s no need to sign up (for specific sessions but we do ask that you register for the event as a whole); pick your sessions based on what you are interested in. We’ll break for lunch (included) and then continue with sessions in the afternoon. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the sessions\, attendees can choose to participate in hands-on demonstrations (haven’t had a chance to explore the Myhal Visualization Centre? This is your chance!) and gamified activities (Are you digital or analogue? Discover your true nature!). We’ll close the day with a brief wrap up and announce our prize winners. \n\n\n\nWe hope you’ll spend the day listening to\, and learning from\, others’ perspectives and leave with new ideas (and hopefully a few easy-to-implement but new-to-you shortcuts).  \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to join us\, register now! There is no registration fee for members of the U of T community. \n\n\n\nWant to know more about the Workshop? \n\n\n\n\nBookmark the Workshop’s homepage\n\n\n\nCheck out the ETO’s playlist FASE to Face (and subscribe to our YouTube channel)\n\n\n\nFollow us on Twitter (@fase_eto)\n\n\n\nConnect on LinkedIn (FASE Education Technology Office))
