SUMMARY:Language Exchange Sessions and Second Language Teaching
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nDeveloping Students’ Verbal Fluency\, Self-Confidence and Intercultural Skills Through Spanish/English Virtual Language Exchange Sessions with Native SpeakersJuan Carlos Rocha Osornio\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Spanish and Portuguese \n\n\n\nEven before the COVID-19 pandemic hit\, language teachers have always had to come up with creative ways to have their students practice their oral skills in a meaningful way. This is particularly important considering that learning a foreign language is often accompanied by feelings of anxiety that can potentially hinder the learning process. While virtual classes have brought new challenges\, they nevertheless offer a valuable opportunity for developing students’ verbal fluency\, self-confidence\, and intercultural skills. This session will provide an overview of the Spanish/English Virtual Language Exchange Sessions that were created in response to the pandemic\, so that students taking Spanish in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Toronto and students of English at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo\, Mexico\, could interact and learn from one another while creating a sense of community. \n\n\n\nExpanding the Classroom via Educational Platforms: How TalkAbroad Can Help Create Meaningful Assignments in L2 ClassroomsStefana Gargova\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Germanic Languages and Literatures \n\n\n\nProviding meaningful and compelling forms of practice\, assessment and evaluation of students’ oral communicative skills has always been a struggle in Second Language Teaching\, particularly when learning happens outside of the communities and places the target language is spoken. A new educational platform called TalkAbroad is offering a solution for filling this gap. In this presentation I will share my experience with the platform\, as well as demonstrate various assignment options and share student feedback. \n\n\n\nRegister via Zoom \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).

SUMMARY:CEL Faculty Roundtable: Respectful and Reciprocal Partnerships with Indigenous Community Organizations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Centre for Community Partnerships \n\n\n\nThe Centre for Community Partnerships (CCP) invites you to attend a roundtable focused on building respectful and reciprocal partnerships with Indigenous community organizations. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations have importantly stressed the value of an expanded and deepened education for settler\, displaced and Indigenous students on Indigenous histories\, cultures and issues and have led to a rise in interest in CEL partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations. How can we\, as instructors of CEL courses\, approach our courses and community partnerships so that we contribute to the resources of Indigenous community organizations rather than tax them? How might we avoid imposing a “burden of help\,” and\, more significantly\, move our students beyond an understanding of CEL as an exercise of “helping” towards goals of learning\, solidarity and activism?   \n\n\n\nPanelists:  \n\n\n\n\nJill Carter\, Assistant Professor\, Centre for Drama\, Theatre and Performance Studies\, Transitional Year Programme & Indigenous Studies\, University of Toronto\n\n\n\nOlivia Franks\, Researcher\, Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC)\n\n\n\nTee Duke\, Director\, Indigenous Initiatives\, Office of Indigenous Initiatives\, University of Toronto Mississauga \n\n\n\nEmma Stromberg\, Indigenous Partnerships Advisor\, University of Toronto Faculty of Arts & Science\n\n\n\n\nRegister for Respectful and Reciprocal Partnerships with Indigenous Community Organizations

SUMMARY:The Inner Work of Building Inclusive Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of the Towards Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive Classrooms – Communities and Conversations Series (https://teachingdev.lamp4.utoronto.ca/communities-and-conversations-series/)Facilitators: Jasjit Sangha\, PhD Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Anti-Racist Pedagogies\, CTSIMairi McKenna Edwards\, Coordinator\, Diversity\, Equity\, and Student Experience \nAs bell hooks outlines\, “The classroom is the most radical space of possibility in the academy”. But how do we create these learning experiences for our students? What do we need to learn and unlearn? The journey towards dismantling racist and oppressive histories and behaviours is intensely personal while also being relational. It is challenging and intersectional. This workshop is a personal conversation about how we internalize systems of oppression\, how they are reflected in our teaching practices\, and how we can create a new vision for how we want to be as educators. In this session participants will engage in self-reflection\, small group discussion\, mindfulness practices and large group conversations.   Learning Goals:  • Reflect on how we have been acculturated into systems of oppression and how they take form in our body and everyday practices as educators  • Understand the social conditioning that informed our identity\, its purpose and how we can move forward in relationship with community  • Reflect on the educator you wish to be\, and how that aligns with your deeper values  • Feel empowered to move forward as anti-racist\, anti-oppressive\, anti-colonial educator

SUMMARY:"So What Do I Do Now?" EDIA Practices in Your Classroom and Curriculum: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UTSC’s Centre for Teaching and Learning \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWork on equity\, diversity\, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) has begun to note the many “invisible” ways in which “just the way we do things” can operate to exclude many people in our classrooms and course/program curricula. How can we address that and change some of what we do in our classrooms and courses? This hands-on workshop\, entitled “So What Do I Do Now? EDIA Practices in Your Classroom and Curriculum\,” and Q&A session invites faculty to bring their syllabi and program curricula and join a broad discussion with colleagues about what we could all do in our separate fields and courses. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to be a follow-up to the CTL Celebration of Faculty Showcase\, but all are welcome. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation: Hybrid (Zoom and MW223) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFacilitator: \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDr. Ann Braithwaite\, Professor and Coordinator\, Diversity and Social Justice Studies\, University of Prince Edward Island \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:CTSI Equity Roundtable - Engaging with Indigenous Knowledges and Pedagogies in the Post-Secondary Class
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Andrew Bomberry\, Special Projects Officer (Curriculum and Education)\, The Office of Indigenous InitiativesThe TRC Calls to Action (https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2015/trc/IR4-7-2015-eng.pdf) were released in 2015 and spelled out 94 Calls that were intended to redress past harms\, end present ones\, and set a course for a new\, just relationship with Indigenous Peoples. Since then the University of Toronto has also developed its own Calls to Action to guide its own commitments to reconciliation: Wecheehetowin: Answering the Call: Final Report of the Steering Committee for the University of Toronto Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (https://www.provost.utoronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/155/2018/05/Final-Report-TRC.pdf). News story after news story of Indigenous-Canada relations emphasizes how critically important it is to follow up on these commitments. The task ahead is substantial and essential. The University of Toronto Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) is here to support the university in this work. In this workshop we will be focused on how to implement practices that support reconciliation in the classroom and look at some of the challenges professors face in doing this work. We will also explore some basic concepts and considerations that will be useful for instructors in thinking through how to approach and address these challenges.  This workshop will be focused on Indigenous curriculum and pedagogy\, including how instructors can leverage support from the OII Special Projects Officer for Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy to incorporate Indigenous knowledges and practices into their courses.Learning Outcomes By attending this workshop participants will: \n• become aware of the meanings and potential applications of the concepts: Indigenization\, decolonization\, and reconciliation in the context of the post-secondary classroom • understand the difference between a multicultural approach to education and an Indigenous sovereignty approach • learn about the role of the OII SPO in working with professors to apply these concepts and knowledges to their classrooms

SUMMARY:April 24th SoTL Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting\, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects.Articles in this series are selected by instructors within our SoTL community\, and these papers are a starting point to explore and examine one research study. Facilitators provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.Facilitators:Daniel Adleman\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Writing and Rhetoric\, Faculty of Arts & ScienceVicki Zhang\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Statistical Sciences\, Faculty of Arts & Science \nArticle:Vartiainen\, H.\, & Tedre\, M. (2023). Using artificial intelligence in craft education: Crafting with text-to-image generative models. Digital Creativity\, 1-21. [Library Permalink (https://librarysearch.library.utoronto.ca/permalink/01UTORONTO_INST/fedca1/cdi_informaworld_taylorfrancis_310_1080_14626268_2023_2174557)]Please note that while this study was undertaken in craft education\, our facilitators will be using it as a springboard for a broader conversation on the impact of generative AI on education.Discussion Prompts: \n1. The article serves as a case study and a springboard for us to discuss generative AI and its broader impact on education. It may be helpful for us to discuss similar questions: What part of the pedagogy and assessment in your discipline can be automated? What can’t be automated? What should not be automated?2. When incorporating AI in teaching practices\, how do we delineate human agency in the human/AI collaborative process\, and prevent learning loss stemming from the “low floor” nature of AI tools?3. Considering the methods in this paper (i.e.\, creative making of artifacts + discussions + thematic analysis)\, do you see any limitations\, and how would you address them?4. Considering your own teaching context\, what research question might you have about generative AI and teaching? \nCTSI Staff:Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and LearningPlease email kyle.turner@utoronto.ca (mailto:%20kyle.turner@utoronto.ca) with any questions about this event. We invite you to enroll in the SoTL Hub (https://q.utoronto.ca/enroll/R7PRJ4) on Quercus to access materials (https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/214089/pages/programming) from this and other series.
