SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn: My Journey to Incorporating Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion and Accessibility Meaningfully into my Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Toula Kourgiantakis\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social WorkJoin U of T faculty graduates of the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Teaching Practices course (ACUE-Certified Faculty) as they share insights from the 25 modules they completed over several months. They implemented\, reimagined\, and extended evidence-based teaching practices to support their teaching\, learning and student success at U of T. This Series invites participants to hear from these instructors: their reflections upon what they have learned\, and practical examples and tips informed by evidence-based strategies. Facilitators will engage in discussions on sharing these approaches into one’s current practice. In this workshop\, Professor Toula Kourgiantakis will discuss her ongoing learning on how to incorporate equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and accessibility (EDIA) in the classroom to have meaningful and transformative learning experiences. Professor Kourgiantakis will focus on three areas that have enhanced her teaching: 1) knowing oneself and how that is reflected in what we teach and how we teach\, 2) building relationships with students and a sense of community in the classroom\, and 3) incorporating EDIA in the course design and syllabus. Professor Kourgiantakis will give specific examples on how each area impacts creating more inclusive classroom space and more positive teaching and learning experiences.

SUMMARY:Online Grading Vendor Demonstration: Gradescope (Turnitin)
DESCRIPTION:Vendor: Gradescope (Turnitin)The University is currently conducting a procurement process to select one or more Online Grading Solutions. Online grading solutions allow instructors and their teaching assistants to grade assignments and exams digitally\, even in cases where the student submissions are hand-written. There is an ongoing desire amongst University  instructors to use these kinds of tools to improve the efficacy and consistency of grading\, especially when multiple graders are working on the same assessment artefact. Ideally\, these solutions can be integrated seamlessly with Quercus in the University’s Academic Toolbox. As part of the process\, members of the UofT community are invited to attend presentations and demonstrations by short-listed suppliers. After these presentations\, attendees will be invited to give feedback to the evaluation committee. \nPlease note that each vendor will be demonstrating their wares twice to accommodate as many attendees as possible; there is no need to sign up for more than one session per vendor. Thank you. \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Open Educational Resources: Removing Barriers from Within
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:David Kwasny\, Data and Digital Literacy Librarian\, DSU\, UTSCSarah Shujah\, Liaison Librarian\, UTSC and CTSI PASS Librarian Are you curious about finding teaching materials to support student learning? Or perhaps you are interested in developing teaching materials that all students can access? Celebrate Open Education Week (https://oeweek.oeglobal.org/) and learn how Open Educational Resources (OER) can be optimized for instructional use in this interactive workshop. OER reduces the financial barrier to access materials for students while also strengthening student engagement and learning. You will be introduced to what OER is in comparison to other ‘free’ materials\, unpack the meaning of Creative Commons licensing when using OER\, practice attributing open resources like images\, find and assess OER that you can use in your teaching\, and last discuss how you can contribute to the OER community.  By the end of the session you will: • define open educational resources (OER) • identify the different types of Creative Commons licenses and what each allows/does not allow for the use of an OER • correctly attribute open resource such as images that may be used in presentations • locate OER including open textbooks\, lab/activity materials\, lesson plans\, lectures\, and more • discuss the challenges and benefits of using OER in your teaching  • assess how you will use OER in your own teaching such as adopt\, adapt\, create\, and contribute

SUMMARY:Equity in the Syllabus and in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nEvidence-Informed Guidelines for Supporting EDI with Syllabus Design and ContentMolly Metz\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, PsychologyWilliam Ryan\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Psychology \n\n\n\nSyllabi serve an important function in our classes; not only do they communicate and organize key course information\, they are often the first experience students have with an instructor. Thus\, the syllabus provides an opportunity to set norms of inclusion and encourage student engagement before they ever set foot in a classroom. In this session\, we will share the product of the tri-campus department of psychology EDI subcommittee focused on undergraduate learning: an annotated syllabus with evidence-informed suggestions and examples for how to promote diversity\, equity\, and inclusion throughout the document (and course) in both content and design. \n\n\n\nEquity\, Access and the Co-Learning Classroom: What Happens in a Circle?Simone Davis\, Instructor (former Associate Director)\, Ethics\, Society & Law and Trinity One\, Trinity CollegeKerry Taylor\, Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies \n\n\n\nOur co-learning project re-envisions both community-based learning (CBL) and access models. Partnering with the City of Toronto’s Community Healing and Peers Projects\, we offer courses to a mix of U of T students and community-based alums of the City program. These youth workers and community development innovators bring not only a critical awareness of structural forces of exclusion within the academy\, but also the ability to effect positive change within it. We will present the model…and the holistic andragogy at its heart\, inviting you to think about your own classroom experiences. What is possible? What is it that can happen in a circle? \n\n\n\nRegister via Zoom \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).

SUMMARY:Making Active Learning Opportunities More Equitable for English Language Learners
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UTSC’s Centre for Teaching and Learning \n\n\n\nActive learning opportunities are meant to enable students to learn more effectively. Given the large proportion of students who come from different cultures and educational systems where such opportunities are not the norm\, understanding some of the barriers facing English language learners (ELLs) would help raise awareness of inequities. Participants will be presented with a range of active learning opportunities and will examine strategies that could help move ELLs toward more equitable learning experiences. \n\n\n\nFacilitator: \n\n\n\nElaine Khoo\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream; CTL English Language Development Support Coordinator \n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn: Engaging Students in Meaningful and Authentic Assignments
DESCRIPTION:Part of the CTSI ACUE-Certified Effective Teaching Practices Showcase (https://teachingdev.lamp4.utoronto.ca/acue-lunch-and-learn/) Join U of T faculty graduates of the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Teaching Practices course (ACUE-Certified Faculty) as they share insights from the 25 modules they completed over several months. They implemented\, reimagined\, and extended evidence-based teaching practices to support their teaching\, learning and student success at U of T. This Series invites participants to hear from these instructors: their reflections upon what they have learned\, and practical examples and tips informed by evidence-based strategies. Facilitators will engage in discussions on sharing these approaches into one’s current practice.Facilitator: Linda Trinh\, Assistant Professor\, Exercise Oncology Laboratory\, Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical EducationHow do we bring the real world to the classroom to create more meaningful assignments? It is often challenging to create connections between students’ learning experiences and their everyday lives. The session will focus on inquiry-based learning by implementing instructional practices that support student success and course learning outcomes. Developing meaningful assignments will empower students to apply the content and skills they learned during the concept exploration and concept introduction stages to authentic scenarios and problems.

SUMMARY:March 29th SoTL Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting\, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects.Articles in this series are selected by instructors within our SoTL community\, and these papers are a starting point to explore and examine one research study. Facilitators provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.Facilitators:Tara Black\, Assistant Professor\, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social WorkAlex Rennet\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Mathematical and Computational Sciences\, UTMArticle:Jensen\, J.\, Smith\, C. M.\, Bowers\, R.\, Kaloi\, M.\, Ogden\, T. H.\, Parry\, K. A.\, Payne\, J. S.\, Fife\, P. & Holt\, E. (2022). Asynchronous Online Instruction Leads to Learning Gaps When Compared to a Flipped Classroom. Journal of Science Education and Technology\, 31(6)\, 718-729. [Library Permalink (https://librarysearch.library.utoronto.ca/permalink/01UTORONTO_INST/fedca1/cdi_eric_primary_EJ1351286)] \nDiscussion Prompts: \n1. The authors cite various meta-analyses (p719-720) that suggest a “positive trend for online instruction” (versus traditional instruction). But the results of the paper seem to show the opposite. Does this surprise you? How does it line up with your own experience teaching online and in-person?2. What did you think of how the authors of this study attempted to address confounding variables\, such as instructor-as-researcher\, and student self-selection into course delivery modalities? Were there any confounding variables that they neither addressed nor controlled for?  Do you worry about these same variables in your own SoTL work? Have you found ways to get around them?3. The authors raise Social Presence Theory in their discussion (p 726)\, noting that faculty and peer interactions could be a significant driver of the disparity in student performance they observed.  Are you familiar with SPT? If so\, have you applied it in your teaching (esp. of non-in-person modalities\, recently or during the pandemic)?  Do you think that SPT plays a crucial role in students’ performance in a course delivered in non-traditional modes\, or do you think there are other factors at play that are at least as important?CTSI Staff:Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and LearningPlease email kyle.turner@utoronto.ca (mailto:%20kyle.turner@utoronto.ca) with any questions about this event. We invite you to enroll in the SoTL Hub (https://q.utoronto.ca/enroll/R7PRJ4) on Quercus to access materials (https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/214089/pages/programming) from this and other series.

SUMMARY:CTSI Equity Roundtable - Promoting Greater Equity of Learning Opportunities: Insights from Using Culturally Responsive Pedagogy with Chinese students that Can Benefit All
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Dr. Elaine Khoo\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream; Coordinator\, English Language Development Support\, Centre for Teaching and Learning\, UTSCDr. Xiangying Huo\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Centre for Teaching and Learning\, UTSC  At the U of T\, Chinese students form 65% of the undergraduate and 46% of the graduate international student population (U of T Fact and Figures\, 2021). They represent a tremendous diversity resource if we create opportunities for them. While many Chinese students perform well academically\, those with very low proficiency levels struggle. Chinese students are likely overrepresented\, along with other equity-deserving groups in plagiarism charges (Eaton\, 2022; Friesen\, 2023) but their language burden seems under-represented in institutional data and practice. What might be some inequity issues we need to consider? We will share some useful insights that we have gained through supporting students with extremely low proficiency in the Reading and Writing Excellence (RWE) program by implementing Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Huo & Khoo\, 2022) that can inform our roundtable discussion on pedagogy for active learning so that more students with language limitations can participate with necessary institutional support to help them overcome their initial barriers. We will also collaboratively reflect on our future course design and scaffold for academic integrity practice in this roundtable.Learning Outcomes:By attending this roundtable\, participants will• become aware of research-based and practice-based evidence of Chinese students’ challenges\, aspirations\, and potential to contribute/engage• learn how to create learning experiences in their courses to encourage more student transformation from “powerless” to “empowered”• understand culturally responsive pedagogy and the application of anti-deficit mindset• learn about harnessing differences as strengths and promoting equity and interactional diversityNOTE: You will be asked to answer additional questions when registering. \nEaton\, S.
