SUMMARY:February 3rd SoTL Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting\, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects.Articles in this series are selected by instructors within our SoTL community\, and these papers are a starting point to explore and examine one research study. Facilitators provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.Facilitators:Katherine Patton\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Anthropology\, Faculty of Arts & ScienceShelby Riskin\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology\, Faculty of Arts & Science \nArticle:Otter\, R. R.\, Seipel\, S.\, Graeff\, T.\, Alexander\, B.\, Boraiko\, C.\, Gray\, J.\, Petersen\, K.\, & Sadler\, K. (2013). Comparing student and faculty perceptions of online and traditional courses. What argument are the authors making in this paper about online vs traditional teaching? Do you find their results and interpretations persuasive? Is there anything in this article that might prompt you to change the way you teach online or in person? Why or why not?2. Does the article prompt any questions that you have regarding online vs traditional teaching? If so what are they? \n3. Did they miss anything in their survey questions that you wanted to know or would have asked?4. Did the results surprise you? Do the results line up with what your own experiences with online teaching suggest?CTSI Staff:Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and LearningPlease email kyle.turner@utoronto.ca (mailto:%20kyle.turner@utoronto.ca) with any questions about this event. We invite you to enroll in the SoTL Hub (https://q.utoronto.ca/enroll/R7PRJ4) on Quercus to access materials (https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/214089/pages/programming) from this and other series.

SUMMARY:Fostering Pre-Reading Skills: A Third-Year Course Model Built Around Perusall
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Faculty of Arts & Science\, Teaching and Learning \n\n\n\nDual DeliveryIn-Person\, History Conference Room\, Sidney Smith Hall\, Room 2098\, 100 St. George Street\, Toronto\, ON M5S 3G3Online\, Register via Zoom \n\n\n\nFostering Pre-Reading Skills: A Third-Year Course Model Built Around PerusallAlex Koo\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Philosophy \n\n\n\nPhilosophy students are often told to do their readings before class\, but in practice this does not always happen. This leads to difficulties for students entering fourth-year seminars who have not learned the necessary pre-reading skills to succeed. This session will present a third-year class model that is structured around pre-reading and designed to help students bridge the gap between third and fourth-year courses in Philosophy. A key element to this is Perusall—an asynchronous online peer annotation platform for reading that promotes engagement and collaboration. In addition to Perusall\, the course structure\, assessments\, and student feedback will be described. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).

SUMMARY:Basic Medical Sciences Teaching Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Cornerstone over Capstone: The case for structured career development opportunities early in the undergraduate Biology curriculum as a way to influence science and Biology identities. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented by Temerty Faculty of Medicine \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nImproving the rate at which individuals enter STEM careers remains a national concern. STEM fields are currently facing a crisis with respect to filling jobs with qualified workers\, suggesting that STEM opportunities are available yet remain open and waiting for qualified graduates. Although researchers have previously investigated variables such as demographics and attrition rates associated with the lack of STEM graduates\, there is a critical need for additional research examining the impact of additional career-related variables. Data will be presented on the success of a biology-focused career development course on promoting student science and biology identities. Additional data on student perceptions of career development and how career development earlier in their careers would have been beneficial will also be presented. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Melissa McCartney\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biological Sciences and the STEM Transformation Institute\, Florida International University. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDr. McCartney’s research focuses on developing\, implementing\, and evaluating novel methods of scientific pedagogical practices into biology courses\, with a focus on helping students identify as scientists\, especially as this relates to identifying a scientific career path and entering the STEM workforce. Her work has been supported through ~$1.8M funding from National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF). Prior to her position at FIU\, Dr. McCartney held prominent educational initiatives positions as a Senior Project Director with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)\, as an editor at Science and was a Mirzayan Science Policy Fellow at the National Academies working with the Committee on Women in Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine. Dr. McCartney completed a Postdoctoral Fellow in at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and holds a PhD in Neuroscience from The George Washington University. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin via Zoom

SUMMARY:Online Grading Vendor Demonstration: Crowdmark
DESCRIPTION:Vendor: CrowdmarkThe University is currently conducting a procurement process to select one or more Online Grading Solutions. Online grading solutions allow instructors and their teaching assistants to grade assignments and exams digitally\, even in cases where the student submissions are hand-written. There is an ongoing desire amongst University  instructors to use these kinds of tools to improve the efficacy and consistency of grading\, especially when multiple graders are working on the same assessment artefact. Ideally\, these solutions can be integrated seamlessly with Quercus in the University’s Academic Toolbox. As part of the process\, members of the UofT community are invited to attend presentations and demonstrations by short-listed suppliers. After these presentations\, attendees will be invited to give feedback to the evaluation committee. Please note that each vendor will be demonstrating their wares twice to accommodate as many attendees as possible; there is no need to sign up for more than one session per vendor. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Demystifying the Dossier: Preparing the Teaching Dossier
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:  Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSI  Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and Learning\, CTSI This webinar is part of the Demystifying the Dossier Series. Faculty are welcome to attend one or multiple workshops in the series; recordings will be available for all sessions online (https://teachingdev.lamp4.utoronto.ca/resources/quercus-videos-and-workshop-recordings/).  At the University of Toronto\, a teaching dossier must be submitted as part of the formal review process for tenure and continuing status. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership.  This session focuses on an overview of the content and overall structure of an effective teaching dossier. Participants will develop a plan for assembling and strengthening their own dossiers. They will be guided in how to use a narrative throughout their dossier to connect and create coherence between multiple sections and sources of evidence.  Participants will also have an opportunity to engage with their divisional guidelines to draft key headings for their dossier.  Participants in this workshop will:  • Engage with your own Divisional Guidelines on Teaching Effectiveness to map out key criteria • Identify the key elements of your dossier and artifacts for inclusion • Assess alignment between your teaching claims and evidence\, and identify effective ways to frame evidence • Plan steps for editing your developing narrative and preparing your final document The goal is for participants to leave the session with a clear sense of what steps to take to enhance their dossier drafts. Participants will be provided a digital workbook prior to the webinar and this document will form the basis of the session activities. Please note that this webinar will focus on the preparation of a teaching dossier by appointed faculty members for the purposes of undergoing a review process (tenure or continuing status). Teaching dossiers prepared for job searches carry different expectations and will not be the focus of this session.
