SUMMARY:Adventures in (UN)Grading: How to stop counting and engage more deeply with students and their work
DESCRIPTION:Join U of T faculty graduates of the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Effective Teaching Practices course (ACUE-Certified Faculty) as they share insights from the 25 modules they completed over several months. They implemented\, reimagined\, and extended evidence-based teaching practices to support their teaching\, learning and student success at U of T. The CTSI ACUE-Certified Faculty Lunch and Learn Series invites participants to hear from these instructors: their reflections upon what they have learned\, and practical examples and tips informed by evidence-based strategies. Facilitators will engage in discussions on sharing these approaches into one’s current practice.Facilitator: Deborah Tihanyi (she/her)\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Engineering Communication Program\, Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and PracticeProfessor Tihanyi experienced “something of an epiphany” while taking the ACUE course and learned about specifications (or outcome-based) grading\, through the work of Linda B. Nilson (Specifications Grading (https://librarysearch.library.utoronto.ca/permalink/01UTORONTO_INST/blpd0s/alma991106924066806196) (2015); her synopsis in Inside Higher Ed (https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insidehighered.com%2Fviews%2F2016%2F01%2F19%2Fnew-ways-grade-more-effectively-essay).&data=05%7C01%7Cdeborah.tihanyi%40utoronto.ca%7C840ca3636dc04b1023ec08dadc60b6fb%7C78aac2262f034b4d9037b46d56c55210%7C0%7C0%7C638064605186984543%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=BIl4RXeMXTHML%2BXDanc8zO8ELW0NCiBigx65fufJAiw%3D&reserved=0)). Nilson’s premise is that outcome achievement isn’t a matter of degree\, but an either/or. As a result\, she proposes a system whereby detailed specifications—at the assignment and/or the course level—spell out exactly what is required for an A\, or a B\, or a C\, and that students choose which outcome they want to achieve. As teachers\, then\, we work to facilitate that learning and achievement\, with the grade a foregone conclusion (provided the “specifications” are met).Professor Tihanyi was all set to use specifications grading for a humanities-and-social-science elective for undergraduate engineering students but got cold feet.In this webinar\, hear Professor Tihanyi share her experiences with specifications grading and with “ungrading” (if you’re not familiar with the term\, see Jesse Stommel’s blog (https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jessestommel.com%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cdeborah.tihanyi%40utoronto.ca%7C840ca3636dc04b1023ec08dadc60b6fb%7C78aac2262f034b4d9037b46d56c55210%7C0%7C0%7C638064605186984543%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ASnPDkRMUc368atD9Tg07j0I%2B1Nn%2FE%2FV5%2FVk5bq3mfA%3D&reserved=0) and UNgrading (https://librarysearch.library.utoronto.ca/permalink/01UTORONTO_INST/blpd0s/alma991107009024606196) (2020). Learn from examples and stories about inroads made and where challenges have been anticipated. Webinar participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences with grading (specifications or otherwise) and how we might make the process less painful—both for ourselves and for our students.

SUMMARY:Reflection in Experiential Learning Design\, Assessment and Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UTSC’s Centre for Teaching and Learning \n\n\n\nIn experiential learning (EL)\, reflection is the glue that ties the experience to course content and vice versa. In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to discuss reflection and explain its importance in EL; choose and design reflection assignments (there are many more options than journals and reflection papers!); pose questions that inspire deeper reflection; and inspire students to use reflection to make their learning more meaningful. \n\n\n\nFacilitators: \n\n\n\nDr. Al Hearn\, Educational Developer for Experiential Learning\, CTL \n\n\n\nDr. Kamini Persaud\, Experiential Learning Coordinator\, CTL \n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Team-based Projects: Developing effective assignments and assessments
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Lydia Wilkinson\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Communication Coordinator: Chemical Engineering\, Engineering Communication Program and Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice \nTeam-based projects are becoming a common tool for teaching and learning in a variety of course contexts . In Engineering\, students participate in team-based courses in every year of their undergraduate program. These courses involve team-based\, and team-graded\, deliverables that require the contributions of all team members. Although team-based assignments are valuable opportunities for professional skill development\, they can pose challenges in implementation: ensuring equitable work distribution\, assessing team process in addition to product\, and ensuring students learn about how to structure effective teams (and not just learn that they don’t like them). Key to mitigating these challenges is not only effective design\, but targeted support and feedback on team process. In this interactive workshop\, we will share our expertise in team-based project design and assessment from our years of experience designing and running team-based\, project\, courses in Engineering. We will work with participants to identify potential opportunities for team-based assignments\, generate a preliminary plan for implementation\, and address participant concerns around running team-based project learning.

SUMMARY:Searching the SoTL Higher Education Literature
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Emily Hector\, Liaison Librarian\, EducationElizabeth O’Brien\, Liaison Librarian\, Computer and Mathematical Sciences & Makerspace Librarian Sarah Shujah\, Liaison Librarian\, Human Geography & Biological Sciences\, UTSC \nHave you ever wanted to explore a new evidence-based pedagogical method in your teaching? Or been interested in publishing research on a teaching topic and weren’t sure what already exists in the scholarly literature? How do you start to identify where the “gap” in existing research might live? Or maybe you’re just not sure where to start.   \nIt can be challenging to begin your research in databases both inside and outside your subject area. This practical and interactive workshop will introduce you to finding online sources of teaching and learning literature available through the University of Toronto Libraries. You will also have an opportunity to refine your research onteaching question and build search skills and strategies that you will need to effectively find the most relevant literature.  At the conclusion of this session\, you will be able to:  • refine your research on teaching question  • identify key concepts and related terms for your research question • effectively search using controlled vocabulary and Boolean operators on your topic using a variety of online SoTL related databases • locate key literature to inform your inquiry into teaching and learning • maintain current awareness of new SoTL research as it is publishedPlease note that a laptop is required for this workshop. This session is open to all SoTL experience levels. \n*NOTE – review of the November 16th 2022 workshop is highly recommended.
