SUMMARY:Teaching and Evaluating Student Writing
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nDual DeliveryIn-Person\, History Conference Room\, Sidney Smith Hall\, Room 2098\, 100 St. George Street\, Toronto\, ON M5S 3G3Online\, Register via Zoom \n\n\n\nMarking Multilingual Students’ Writing FairlyLeora Freedman\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, English Language Learning Coordinator\, English Language Learning (ELL)Daveeda Goldberg\, Writing Instructor\, New College\, ELL Specialist \n\n\n\nThe English Language Learning (ELL) Program fields many questions from faculty and TAs about marking the writing of multilingual students. Markers frequently express concerns about maintaining fairness and responding effectively and efficiently to support language development. This presentation will showcase a new eModule developed by ELL for self-paced learning as well as use in departmental meetings and TA grading sessions. It is the first of a series of eModules called Teaching in Our Multilingual Environment. Participants will learn how they can make use of this growing collection of eModules for the benefit of their departments and courses. \n\n\n\nTeaching Writing in the Age of Mechanical Content ProductionDavid Suarez\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, PhilosophyAlexandra Gustafson\, Lead Writing TA\, Graduate Student\, Philosophy \n\n\n\nArtificial neural networks\, trained on vast quantities of text written by human beings\, can now be used to produce coherent\, grammatical content on demand. Machine learning tools of this kind\, such as GPT-3\, are widely available\, cheap\, and have been packaged for use by the general public. While these tools might not produce the best essays\, they can produce text that stands a chance of passing high school\, and perhaps even university-level\, classes. (Refer to the GPT-3 article by Philosophy bear [https://philosophybear.substack.com/p/gpt-3-is-right-now-already-more-than] for discussion and examples.) This has implications for the writing projects we assign our students. We want to explore those implications\, in both practical and theoretical dimensions\, with an emphasis on pedagogical issues—in particular\, thinking through the very point of writing assignments\, and what we hope to teach using them. \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).

SUMMARY:Creating Equitable Classrooms: Power and Knowledge in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:Professor Ahmed Allahwala\, Department of Human Geography\, UTSCDr. Jennifer Esmail\, Director\, Centre for Community PartnershipsThe intent of this lunch and learn is to collectively examine power as a central feature of classroom dynamics and teaching-learning processes. As instructors\, we have to strike a delicate balance between our institutional\, pedagogical and subject-matter authority and our desire to create genuinely open and inclusive learning spaces for collective meaning-making and knowledge production. In this interactive session\, we will invite participants to reflect on how to move towards more inclusive teaching by productively reimagining power-knowledge frameworks. This session will also allow participants to collaboratively generate pragmatic ways to engage thoughtfully with power and knowledge in and outside of classroom learning spaces. We will present concrete examples from our shared experience teaching community-engaged university courses\, including a youth-led participatory action research course in East Scarborough and a Walls to Bridges course\, an innovative learning community in correctional settings for both incarcerated and traditionally-enrolled students. Despite the facilitators’ experience in community-engaged learning\, the broader conversation about power and knowledge and equitable classrooms will be relevant to all instructors and course formats.

SUMMARY:The Alternate Universes of Curricular and Co-curricular Experiential Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UTSC’s Centre for Teaching and Learning \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nStudents travel between two divisions that serve them but do not necessarily work together seamlessly: Academic Affairs and Students Affairs (or Student Life). This can greatly affect Experiential Learning. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nUTSC offers curricular EL through most academic departments. Students can also find support through CTL\, the Office of Community Partnerships and Engagement\, and more. Co-curricular EL is offered through the Academic Advising and Career Centre (AA&CC). \n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will talk about Experiential Learning theory and best practices that span various departments. We will discuss the value of offerings to students and we will hear from students who will share their insights. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFacilitators: \n\n\n\nDavid Fenton\, Industry Partnerships\, Innovation and WIL Lead\, Department of Management \n\n\n\nDr. Al Hearn\, Educational Developer – Experiential Learning\, CTL \n\n\n\nWei Huang\, Career Counsellor\, AA&CC \n\n\n\nWendy Szeto\, Employer Engagement Coordinator – Experiential Learning\, AA&CC \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister at https://forms.office.com/r/VnVzzjLZBa

SUMMARY:Introduction to SoTL: Finding a Starting Point
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:  Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSI Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and Learning\, CTSI The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) helps us avoid what Shulman (1999) described as “pedagogical amnesia\,” the many things about our teaching we forget from one term to the next. SoTL enables us to capture insights into our teaching in a way that allows us to revisit them time and again. This virtual\, interactive session serves as an introduction and launch to the Fall-Winter 2022-23 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) webinar series. In Part I of the session\, we cultivate a way of thinking about teaching inquiry\, beginning with curiosity/inquiry questions and ideas that you currently have about your teaching and learning context. We will discuss a range of data sources that you can draw on to inform your questions(s). We discuss possible strategies to transform conceptual research ideas into concrete research questions. In Part II we address ways to get into a mindset of inquiry\, by creating a space to launch your journey from one of reflective teaching to the initial stages in research design. We will discuss project planning\, resources available to you\, and research ethics considerations. Participants will have opportunities to learn and gain advice from facilitators and colleagues during breakout groups to cultivate discussions on these topics.By the end of this session\, you will have: • Identified a curiosity/inquiry question and/or area of research interest  • Mapped out key research concepts\, phrases\, and ideas in a Webinar Worksheet to carry forward to the next webinar in the SoTL Series: Searching the SoTL Higher Education Literature (Jan. 30\, 2023)• Considered sources of data to draw on to examine your research on teaching question(s) further • Gained an awareness of key research ethics and SoTL considerations at U of T• Mapped out your early research design plans• Participated in building a community of teaching and learning researchers at U of T• Learned about the upcoming CTSI-SoTL programming and other supports. This webinar is open to instructors of all SoTL experience levels.

SUMMARY:Teaching\, Managing\, and Assessing Large Courses
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nDual DeliveryIn-Person\, Political Science Conference Room\, Sidney Smith Hall\, Room 3130\, 100 St. George Street\, Toronto\, ON M5S 3G3Online\, Register via Zoom \n\n\n\nLifecycle of Assessments in a Large CourseAsif Zaman\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Mathematics \n\n\n\nFrom an instructor’s perspective\, every assessment goes through roughly five key stages of its “lifecycle”.1. Design the assessment.2. Create a grading rubric.3. Build comment library.4. Grade assessments.5. Review graded assessments. Each stage requires significant resources to produce high quality and consistent feedback. In a small course\, I traditionally lead stages 1\, 2\, and 5 myself whereas a couple of TAs will do stages 3 and 4. As the coordinator for a large course\, I am under significant time constraints and cannot follow this traditional scheme without significant compromise on grading quality. With the support of the Writing-Integrated Teaching (WIT) program\, I have remodeled this workflow in collaboration with Head TAs and a Lead Writing TA. I only lead stage 1 and initiate stage 2. With my support\, Head TAs lead stages 2\, 3\, and 5. Grading TAs focus primarily on stage 4 with support from Head TAs. This remodel has maximized the impact of my limited time\, created leadership and development opportunities for experienced TAs\, strengthened TA grading skills\, and improved assessment feedback. I hope to share my experience with others along with suggested strategies that could be adopted in other large courses. \n\n\n\nManaging a 1000+ Students Class: Perspectives and Strategies from a Head TAIrene Poetranto\, Head TA\, PhD Candidate\, Political Science \n\n\n\nPOL106H1 is a large course of over 1\,000 students taught by one faculty member and supported by a Head Teaching Assistant (TA) and a team of TAs. In this presentation\, I will share my experiences as a Head TA and identify strategies that establish and maintain expectations while facilitating processes for managing students and the TA team. My presentation will highlight how support and resources are coordinated and offer methods for managing the abundance of emails and requests throughout the semester. I will also address the realities of balancing TA responsibilities with graduate work and what structures can help ensure that the faculty member’s course learning objectives are achieved and students can successfully demonstrate their learning.

SUMMARY:Demystifying the Dossier: Drafting Your Statement of Teaching Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, CTSI Kyle Turner\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and Learning\, CTSI This webinar is part of the Demystifying the Dossier Series. Faculty are welcome to attend one or multiple workshops in the series; recordings will be available for all sessions online (https://teachingdev.lamp4.utoronto.ca/resources/quercus-videos-and-workshop-recordings/).  At the University of Toronto\, a teaching dossier must be submitted as part of the formal review process for tenure and continuing status. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership.   This session focuses on one of the key components of the teaching dossier: the opening Statement of Teaching Philosophy (STP). A strong statement summarizes and highlights the core beliefs and principles of an educator while also providing a conceptual framework for the dossier materials that follow. It needs to provide enough information\, evidence\, and examples from your teaching to convey a vivid sense of the values and approaches of an instructor\, yet also needs to be clear and concise enough to be meaningful to the reader of the dossier.  Participants in this workshop will:  • Identify key elements of a STP    • Review steps to follow when preparing to write the STP  • Learn strategies to interpret\, connect\, and integrate sources of evidence (e.g.\, course evaluations\, mid-course feedback\, peer observations of teaching) • Practice articulating key aspects of their teaching and integrating evidence to support claims of effectiveness The goal is for participants to leave the session with a clear sense of what steps to take to enhance their drafts. Participants will be provided a digital workbook prior to the webinar and this document will form the basis of the session activities. Please note that this session will not focus on how to prepare/compile the actual dossier itself – for this topic\, please register for Preparing the Teaching Dossier (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/2863).
