SUMMARY:Mastery Learning in an Introductory Computer Science Course
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nDual DeliveryIn-Person\, History Conference Room\, Sidney Smith Hall\, Room 2098\, 100 St. George Street\, Toronto\, ON M5S 3G3Online\, Register via Zoom \n\n\n\nJacqueline Smith\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Computer ScienceJennifer Campbell\, Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Computer SciencePaul Gries\, Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Computer ScienceAndrew Petersen\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Mathematical and Computational Sciences (UTM) \n\n\n\nThe course material in CSC108 (Introduction to Computer Programming) is cumulative week-to-week. This presents challenges for students who fall behind\, requiring them to catch up with previous material before continuing. To address this challenge\, we piloted a self-paced mastery learning version of CSC108 in Winter 2018 and again in Winter 2019. In this session\, we’ll share our reflections and lessons learned from offering a mastery learning version of a large introductory course at U of T\, including the need for explicit scaffolding of expected progress and resources required to simultaneously support students at different stages in the course. \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).

SUMMARY:September 28th SoTL Journal Club
DESCRIPTION:The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting\, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects. Articles in this series are selected by instructors within our SoTL community\, and these papers are a starting point to explore and examine one research study. Facilitators provide discussion prompts to guide and engage us in conversations that will resonate across all disciplines and SoTL experience levels.   Facilitators:Kristen Allen\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy\, UTM Sheliza Ibrahim\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Institute for the Study of University Pedagogy\, UTM Article:Merchán Tamayo\, J. What kind of’autonomy-supportive language’ examples can you share from a syllabus yourecently created from your own course\, or what kind of ‘autonomy-supportivelanguage’ would you hope to use in a recent course syllabus of yourchoice? We invite you to bring a copy of your course syllabus to draw on for your own reflection\, with the option to share elements of it during the breakout discussions.2. Does the mixed methods approach support the authors’ research questions and conclusions\, and are the quantitative and qualitative aspects aligned? Do you have any insights to add to the limitations of this study or perhaps you might offer further thinking to the limitations the authors already shared?3. In describingtheir samples for the two studies\, the authors note the students’ gender\,race/ethnicity\, year of study\, enrollment status\, and faculty. Surprisingly fora study done at University of Ottawa\, they say nothing about the students’linguistic status or their home languages. How would this information impactour reading of their results?4. As importantas the syllabus is for setting the tone of a course\, it is often a challenge toget students to read it. How do you encourage your students to read yoursyllabus? How else can you give a “first impression” that supportsstudent autonomy (e.g. on Quercus\, on the first day)?CTSI Staff:Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL  Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and LearningPlease email kyle.turner@utoronto.ca (mailto:%20kyle.turner@utoronto.ca) with any questions about this event. We invite you to enroll in the SoTL Hub (https://q.utoronto.ca/enroll/R7PRJ4) on Quercus to access materials (https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/214089/pages/programming) from this and other series.

SUMMARY:Creating Equitable Classrooms: Change Beyond Equity
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Máiri McKenna Edwards\, (pronounced mar-ee) she/her\, Coordinator\, Diversity\, Equity & Student Experience\, Department of Curriculum Teaching & Learning\, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education \nSimply put\, equity is not enough. Equity focuses on bringing people into a system and can result in little to no meaningful change in a system. It can even result in more harm under the guise of equity.  So\, what does that mean for those of us who want to be involved in systemic change? In this discussion\, we will come together in community to think about these issues and do some personal reflection on both what we DO know and what we do NOT. Finally\, we’ll think together and PLAN our way to be in ACTION in both our classrooms and within systems where we CAN ACT.
