DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Centre for Faculty Development\, Temerty Faculty of Medicine  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for the health professional who is currently in\, or considering an education role at their practice site and/or academic institution. Participants will be engaged in reflective activities and discussions about their own career states (current and future). Alignment of desired career goals in education\, with learning needs and opportunities for development will be a focus of the workshop. \n\n\n\nConcepts of career success and meaningful work as well as the role that developmental networks and mentors play will be brought in to the discussions. Participants can expect to leave the workshop with a personal action plan for future development. \n\n\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to describe the characteristics of the educator role across various healthcare contexts\, analyze their career path and ‘current state’\, outline the skills and markers of ‘success’ for clinical educator positions\, identify their options for future career directions and develop a learning plan in order to support decision making about future career directions. \n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Creating and Managing Assessment Questions in Large Courses
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice    \n\n\n\nCultivating a Questioning Mind: Student Led Question Composition in Large CoursesNaomi Levy-Strumpf\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Human BiologyMaria Papaconstantinou\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Human Biology \n\n\n\nTo facilitate critical thinking and mastery of foundational concepts in a large Genetics course (~1000 students)\, we decided to actively engage students in question creation. We used “Quizzical” an online platform developed by Prof. Dan Riggs. Via this platform\, students are tasked with the creation of multiple-choice questions. To foster metacognition and encourage a shift from perceiving learning as memorization\, students were encouraged to create application-based questions. Higher grades were granted to question that creatively integrated multiple concepts or required knowledge application. The success of incorporating Quizzical as an integral assessment in this course prompted us to further develop the platform to facilitating broad-base use across disciplines. We will discuss the learning outcomes achieved by engaging the students in question creation\, as well as the added features in the latest Quizzical 5.0 version. \n\n\n\nBuilding and Maintaining an Equitable Question Bank for Online TestsJeremy Webb\, Assistant Professor\, Astronomy and Astrophysics \n\n\n\nWhen administering an online test for large classes\, drawing questions from a large question bank can be preferrable to releasing an identical set of questions to each student to minimize academic integrity violations. However\, with each student receiving a different set of questions\, it is difficult to ensure that each test has the same difficulty and covers the same topics. I will discuss the lessons I have learned after teaching two large breadth requirement courses online over the past three years and outline my current method for maintaining an equitable question bank for my courses. \n\n\n\nRegister via Zoom     \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. DESCRIPTION:The CTSI-SoTL team is excited to continue the monthly Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Journal Club Series through Fall-Winter 2022-23. The goal of this series is to provide an opportunity for our community to explore the SoTL literature in a group setting\, both to find practical applications to implement in the classroom and to inform our own SoTL projects.This Journal Club event is unique as the co-authors of the article are U of T faculty. SUMMARY:Demystifying the Dossier: Drafting Your Statement of Teaching Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, PhD\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, CTSI Kyle Turner\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and Learning\, CTSI This webinar is part of the Demystifying the Dossier Series. Faculty are welcome to attend one or multiple workshops in the series; recordings will be available for all sessions online (https://teachingdev.lamp4.utoronto.ca/resources/quercus-videos-and-workshop-recordings/).  At the University of Toronto\, a teaching dossier must be submitted as part of the formal review process for tenure and continuing status. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership.   This session focuses on one of the key components of the teaching dossier: the opening Statement of Teaching Philosophy (STP). A strong statement summarizes and highlights the core beliefs and principles of an educator while also providing a conceptual framework for the dossier materials that follow. It needs to provide enough information\, evidence\, and examples from your teaching to convey a vivid sense of the values and approaches of an instructor\, yet also needs to be clear and concise enough to be meaningful to the reader of the dossier.  Participants in this workshop will:  • Identify key elements of a STP    • Review steps to follow when preparing to write the STP  • Learn strategies to interpret\, connect\, and integrate sources of evidence (e.g.\, course evaluations\, mid-course feedback\, peer observations of teaching) • Practice articulating key aspects of their teaching and integrating evidence to support claims of effectiveness The goal is for participants to leave the session with a clear sense of what steps to take to enhance their drafts. Participants will be provided a digital workbook prior to the webinar and this document will form the basis of the session activities. DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice \n\n\n\nDual DeliveryIn-Person\, Political Science Conference Room\, Sidney Smith Hall\, Room 3130\, 100 St. George Street\, Toronto\, ON M5S 3G3Online\, Register via Zoom  \n\n\n\nLifecycle of Assessments in a Large CourseAsif Zaman\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Mathematics \n\n\n\nFrom an instructor’s perspective\, every assessment goes through roughly five key stages of its “lifecycle”.1. Design the assessment.2. Create a grading rubric.3. Build comment library.4. Grade assessments.5. Review graded assessments.Each stage requires significant resources to produce high quality and consistent feedback. In a small course\, I traditionally lead stages 1\, 2\, and 5 myself whereas a couple of TAs will do stages 3 and 4. As the coordinator for a large course\, I am under significant time constraints and cannot follow this traditional scheme without significant compromise on grading quality. With the support of the Writing-Integrated Teaching (WIT) program\, I have remodeled this workflow in collaboration with Head TAs and a Lead Writing TA. I only lead stage 1 and initiate stage 2. With my support\, Head TAs lead stages 2\, 3\, and 5. Grading TAs focus primarily on stage 4 with support from Head TAs. This remodel has maximized the impact of my limited time\, created leadership and development opportunities for experienced TAs\, strengthened TA grading skills\, and improved assessment feedback. I hope to share my experience with others along with suggested strategies that could be adopted in other large courses. \n\n\n\nManaging a 1000+ Students Class: Perspectives and Strategies from a Head TAIrene Poetranto\, Head TA\, PhD Candidate\, Political Science \n\n\n\nPOL106H1 is a large course of over 1\,000 students taught by one faculty member and supported by a Head Teaching Assistant (TA) and a team of TAs. In this presentation\, I will share my experiences as a Head TA and identify strategies that establish and maintain expectations while facilitating processes for managing students and the TA team. My presentation will highlight how support and resources are coordinated and offer methods for managing the abundance of emails and requests throughout the semester. I will also address the realities of balancing TA responsibilities with graduate work and what structures can help ensure that the faculty member’s course learning objectives are achieved and students can successfully demonstrate their learning. \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines.
