This leads to difficulties for students entering fourth-year seminars who have not learned the necessary pre-reading skills to succeed. This session will present a third-year class model that is structured around pre-reading and designed to help students bridge the gap between third and fourth-year courses in Philosophy. A key element to this is Perusall—an asynchronous online peer annotation platform for reading that promotes engagement and collaboration. In addition to Perusall\, the course structure\, assessments\, and student feedback will be described. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. SUMMARY:Searching the SoTL Higher Education Literature

Or been interested in publishing research on a teaching topic and weren’t sure what already exists in the scholarly literature? How do you start to identify where the “gap” in existing research might live? Or maybe you’re just not sure where to start.   \nIt can be challenging to begin your research in databases both inside and outside your subject area. This practical and interactive workshop will introduce you to finding online sources of teaching and learning literature available through the University of Toronto Libraries. You will also have an opportunity to refine your research onteaching question and build search skills and strategies that you will need to effectively find the most relevant literature.  At the conclusion of this session\, you will be able to:  • refine your research on teaching question  • identify key concepts and related terms for your research question • effectively search using controlled vocabulary and Boolean operators on your topic using a variety of online SoTL related databases • locate key literature to inform your inquiry into teaching and learning • maintain current awareness of new SoTL research as it is publishedPlease note that a laptop is required for this workshop. SUMMARY:Team-based Projects: Developing effective assignments and assessments
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Lydia Wilkinson\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Communication Coordinator: Chemical Engineering\, Engineering Communication Program and Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice  \nTeam-based projects are becoming a common tool for teaching and learning in a variety of course contexts . In Engineering\, students participate in team-based courses in every year of their undergraduate program. These courses involve team-based\, and team-graded\, deliverables that require the contributions of all team members. Although team-based assignments are valuable opportunities for professional skill development\, they can pose challenges in implementation: ensuring equitable work distribution\, assessing team process in addition to product\, and ensuring students learn about how to structure effective teams (and not just learn that they don’t like them). Key to mitigating these challenges is not only effective design\, but targeted support and feedback on team process.In this interactive workshop\, we will share our expertise in team-based project design and assessment from our years of experience designing and running team-based\, project\, courses in Engineering. We will work with participants to identify potential opportunities for team-based assignments\, generate a preliminary plan for implementation\, and address participant concerns around running team-based project learning.

SUMMARY:Advancing Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion in the Department of Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:A Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching and Learning Community of Practice    \n\n\n\nJohn De Backere\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, ChemistryMadeline Gerbig\, Chemistry LibrarianSoha Ahmadi\, Postdoctoral Fellow \n\n\n\nIn the Department of Chemistry\, we have developed an asynchronous online Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion (EDI) training course aimed towards our first-year chemistry students. This interactive training uses H5P modules embedded within Quercus and introduces undergraduate students to core EDI concepts and departmental/institutional resources. The project was a collaboration between three members of our departmental EDI Committee (a Postdoctoral Fellow\, Faculty Member\, and Librarian) with support by our departmental Chemistry Teaching Fellowship Program (CTFP) and external consultations. The training course was first piloted in the Summer of 2022 with plans for further implementation. In our presentation we will share our approach and challenges in developing the resource\, feedback from students\, and discuss our future directions. \n\n\n\nRegister via Zoom    \n\n\n\nThe Faculty of Arts & Science Teaching & Learning Community of Practice (CoP) was established in 2015 to create a collegial forum for faculty and instructors to meet and share teaching practices and strategies across fields and disciplines. This CoP is coordinated by Andrew Dicks (Professor\, Teaching Stream and Associate Chair\, Undergraduate\, Department of Chemistry).
