SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn - Using your syllabus as a roadmap to learning: Strategies to enable reflection and engagement
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Lydia Wilkinson\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Engineering Communication Program (ECP)\, Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP)\, FASEYour course syllabus is an important tool for communicating expectations\, including learning outcomes\, course structure and assignment design. Yet while we often invest significant energy in creating our syllabi and spend time in the first weeks of class reviewing these\, it is easy to overlook their value as a learning tool throughout the rest of the semester. Like any good teaching tool\, a course syllabus presents an opportunity to check-in with our students\, to align our expectations and help them understand how they are learning what they are learning.This lunch and learn session takes as its starting point the ACUE module on “Preparing an Effective Syllabus”\, and shares strategies on how a well-designed syllabus can be used as a touchpoint to enable student goalsetting and assessment from the beginning of the semester to completion of the course. Specifically\, we will review approaches to developing a graphical syllabus that can work as a roadmap for students\, learn about goalsetting activities that will help students locate course learning outcomes and apply these to their learning outside the classroom\, and discuss ways to use the syllabus to reflect on success in achieving these learning outcomes throughout the semester.Our faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI.Learn more about the ACUE Lunch and Learn Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/acue-lunch-and-learn/)

Instructors and teaching assistants will learn about ASD\, strategies to support students with ASD\, and working with Accessibility Services. The presenters will provide suggestions for inclusive instructional design for teaching\, evaluation\, and crafting a syllabus. This presentation will also expand attendees’ conceptualization of participation/engagement in the classroom. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and actively engage in case studies. Resources will be provided at the end of the presentation.

How can we leverage diverse language skills to cultivate inclusive learning environments and foster belonging? This session examines the intersection between languages and communication with accessibility\, intercultural competencies\, and asset-based pedagogies. In doing so\, we consider the power of languages and communication in reconstructing learning spaces and identities and identify strategies to remove barriers and foster belonging in our culturally and linguistically diverse community. Learning Outcomes:• Examine key principles and approaches of inclusive languages and communication informing pedagogies and practices in the classroom• Investigate language and communication strategies for removing barriers\, empowering learners\, and amplifying learning in your courses• Discuss how inclusive languages and communication can align with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and reinforce ongoing work in anti-racist/anti-oppressive education.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: You Jia Lee\, Program Coordinator\, Intercultural and Global Programs\, International Education Centre\, UTM Rebeca Mahadeo\, Student Development Coordinator\, Intercultural Programs\, International Education Centre\, UTM  \nThis session highlights tools and a framework you can put in place in your classroom to help students build intercultural skills\, and gain global fluency in this ever connected world. The purpose of the framework is to provide direction and intentionality to intercultural programming across all three U of T campuses using best practices\, theories\, and principles. It is to be used as a guide of reference\, supporting a common foundation of intercultural competence to better inform future programming and to be more intentionally integrated. The creation of this framework is supported by the International Student Experience Fund (ISEF). This project aims to not only enhance intercultural interactions and understanding among U of T students\, staff\, and faculty\, but to also promote and strengthen intercultural development and global fluency at all three campuses. \nBy the end of this session\, attendees will:• Understand and be aware of an intercultural framework that can be applied to curricular and co-curricular settings at U of T \n• Participate in an exchange with colleagues around best practices to promote an intercultural mindset in learning environments
