This change is necessary because Turnitin has acquired Ouriginal and will no longer be developing or supporting the Ouriginal platform (refer to CTSI’s Plagiarism Detection page (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/resources/plagiarism-detection/) for more information). In this session we will guide you through the process of switching from Ouriginal to Turnitin\, demonstrating its features and functionalities\, and showing how it is available to be integrated into your Quercus course assignments. The session will also walk through how to interpret the similarity report generated by Turnitin. We will provide a demonstration to explain the nuances of the similarity report\, helping you understand how to interpret the results and take appropriate action. By the end of this session\, you will be equipped with the knowledge and resources to successfully switch from Ouriginal to Turnitin and use it effectively in your Quercus course for plagiarism detection.

SUMMARY:SoTL Summer Series: Learning Analytics and SoTL (Part III)
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSI Presenters: Alan da Silveira Fleck\, Data Analyst\, Learning Analytics\, Office of the Vice-Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate EducationTingting Zhu\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, GIS Program Director\, Geography\, Geomatics and Environment\, UTMNaomi Levy-Strumpf\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Human Biology Program This session addresses an emergent area that utilizes learning analytics as one source of data for a scholarship of teaching and learning study. Alan da Silveira Fleck and Tingting Zhu will share highlights from their recently published article that focuses on online asynchronous discussion (OAD) and using Quercus log files and student quiz scores to assess the effectiveness of that engagement approach. Naomi Levy-Strumpf will share findings from her project as a participant in the Data Driven Design – Quercus Analytics (D3:QA) cohort where she focused on New Analytics Course Activity Report on the course’s Quercus page to gather information on the number of views and timing of access to course lecture notes and the study guide. A key finding is that accessing the course study guide may be a key resource related to higher quiz scores. Students who accessed this resource in advance had a better performance compared to those who accessed the material closer to the deadline. Naomi also used Quercus Analytics to identify gaps and intervene strategically to promote mastery of concepts and impact student success within the time frame of a single semester. This session is open to instructors of all scholarship of teaching and learning experience levels and any instructor or staff with an interest in gaining more information about learning analytics. This event is Part III of the CTSI SoTL Summer Series that showcases our U of T instructors’ participation in SoTL conferences\, the 2023-24 CTSI SoTL Writing Cohort\, in SoTL and Learning Analytics initiatives and in some cases recent publications flowing from these activities. The presentation topics are diverse and fall within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER) in higher education. All presentations address presenters’ efforts to understand ways to enhance student learning and employ theoretical frameworks and systemic inquiry to meet these goals. Presenters will share their research goals/questions\, research design\, methods and core findings. There will be time set aside for a Q&A. Participants are welcome from all SoTL experience levels.

This practical\, interactive session will consider the essential elements of an effective syllabus\, review current best practices in syllabus design and examine a model University of Toronto course syllabus. As a participant in this session\, we ask that you have one of the following at hand during the workshop:  \n• A proposed course syllabus for a new course you would like to teach one day OR • A course syllabus for an existing U of T course you are seeking to refresh The goal of this workshop is for each participant to leave with a well-developed plan for revising/crafting a powerful syllabus that works for both instructor and learner. Participants who join the session without a document to work from and discuss in break-out groups will not benefit as fully from this session.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cristina D’Amico\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Graduate Student Development & TA Training\, CTSI Michal Kasprzak\, Assistant Director\, CTSI/TATP In this workshop\, we will offer a dual introduction to two key concepts in effective and inclusive course design: “Backward Design” and “Universal Design for Learning (UDL).” Participants will understand how to prioritize their intended learning outcomes (Wiggins and McTighe\, 2005) in their course design\, and how to use these outcomes to structure assessments\, lectures\, and in-class engagements with students. We will simultaneously consider the core principles of UDL (multiple means of expression\, representation\, and action & expression) and how to incorporate these modalities into your course learning outcomes. By the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to implement inclusive thinking in the construction of their course learning outcomes.
