SUMMARY:Tune into Teaching: Designing Assessments for Learning with UDL and GenAI
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Samantha Chang\, Team Lead\, Pedagogy and Educational Technologies\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIVictoria Sheldon\, Educational Developer\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIThis session explores assessment design through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the evolving role of generative AI (GenAI). Participants will consider practical approaches to assessment preparation (instructions\, expectations\, and framing)\, student demonstration of learning\, and feedback and reflection\, with attention to reducing barriers\, supporting learner variability\, and aligning assessments with essential learning outcomes. The session will also examine how GenAI may influence assessment design decisions across different teaching contexts. Through brief case studies and design prompts\, participants will reflect on and refine assessments from their own teaching contexts.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Cogniti: U of T’s AI Tool to Support Student Learning
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Jordan Holmes\, Senior Manager\, Teaching\, Learning\, and Technology\, CTSIResearch shows that generative AI tool design matters for learning. The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 (https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/oecd-digital-education-outlook-2026_062a7394-en.html) finds that AI tools with clear educational guardrails may support learning outcomes\, while unstructured use of AI risks becoming a shortcut that may hamper genuine learning gains.  Through Cogniti\, U of T is giving instructors control over how AI is used for learning. Cogniti is an AI platform embedded directly in Quercus — no separate accounts required — that lets you shape AI interactions around your course content\, your learning objectives\, and your pedagogical approach\, with built-in safety features to protect student wellbeing. In this session\, you’ll explore how Cogniti enables you to: • Deploy course-specific generative AI learning experiences in Quercus that reflect your syllabus\, learning objectives\, and content • Guide students toward productive learning rather than answer-seeking • Monitor how students are engaging with AI in your course Whether you’re curious about AI’s potential\, concerned about its risks\, or ready to experiment\, we’ll work through how Cogniti can fit within your teaching context. More CTSI Cogniti Programming (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-uoft-genai/genai-programming/)

SUMMARY:Cogniti Onboarding: Setting Up Your AI Tool for Student Use
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Derek Hunt\, Educational Developer\, Teaching\, Learning\, and Technology\, CTSIVictoria Sheldon\, Educational Developer\, Teaching\, Learning\, and Technology\, CTSI Cogniti is U of T’s platform for building course-specific AI tutors: grounded in your content\, aligned with your pedagogy\, and deployed directly in Quercus. In this session\, we will walk you through everything you need to get your tutor up and running\, including how to: • Define a purpose and pedagogical role for your AI tutor • Learn about the safety guardrails already built in Cogniti and how to include your own. • Craft an effective system prompt that guides your tutor’s tone\, scope\, and responses • Upload and integrate your own course materials to ground your tutor in your content • Leave with a working tutor draft ready for further refinement or deployment No prior experience with Cogniti is required: this session is designed for instructors who are just getting started. More CTSI Cogniti Programming (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-uoft-genai/genai-programming/)

SUMMARY:Tune into Teaching: Designing for Inclusion with Quercus and the Academic Toolbox
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Samantha Chang\, Team Lead\, Pedagogy and Educational Technologies\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIMarko Piljevic\, Educational Technology Analyst\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIMaryam Shafiei\, Educational Technology Analyst\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIThis session explores how Quercus and U of T’s Academic Toolbox can support more inclusive and accessible course design practices. Building from foundational Quercus skills\, the session will highlight practical strategies for organizing course content\, communicating expectations\, supporting student learning\, and creating clearer pathways for engagement. Participants will explore Quercus\, Microsoft 365\, and educational technology tools that can support inclusive teaching practices at U of T.The session will begin with an overview and demonstration of key tools and design approaches\, followed by a hands-on\, application-focused portion where participants can explore features and reflect on their own teaching contexts.

SUMMARY:Customizing Cogniti: Aligning for Different Learning Goals
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Derek Hunt\, Educational Developer\, Teaching\, Learning\, and Technology\, CTSIVictoria Sheldon\, Educational Developer\, Teaching\, Learning\, and Technology\, CTSI Once your Cogniti tutor is up and running\, the real work begins: aligning it to what you want students to learn and how you want them to engage. Different learning goals call for different tutor designs\, and changes to your system prompt can shift how students interact with AI support in your course. In this session\, you will: • Explore how system prompts can be tailored to support different learning goals\, from concept checking and writing feedback to study support and guided inquiry • Compare tutor designs across disciplines and course contexts • Discuss strategies for communicating your tutor’s purpose and boundaries to students • Explore advanced Cogniti features that expand what your tutor can do This session is designed for instructors who have completed Cogniti Onboarding or already have a tutor deployed and are ready to take it further. More CTSI Cogniti Programming (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-uoft-genai/genai-programming/)

SUMMARY:UDL in Practice: Designing Methods
DESCRIPTION:UDL in Practice is a monthly professional learning series hosted by the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI). These 30-minute sessions explore small\, practical strategies for inclusive course design through a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach. Each session focuses on a specific area of course design\, such as methods\, materials\, environments\, access\, support\, or executive function\, and invites participants to reflect on teaching practices\, explore examples\, and discuss strategies that can be adapted across different teaching contexts. Sessions are conversational and community-oriented\, with an emphasis on practical ideas instructors can try in their own courses.Attend one session or join throughout the year. Each session stands on its own while contributing to a broader conversation about inclusive and accessible teaching. Insights and strategies generated through the series may later be incorporated into CTSI’s UDL Strategy Libraries (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-uoft-udl/udl-practice/).UDL in Practice SeriesDesigning Methods (September 18\, 2026) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6992)Designing Materials (October 16\, 2026) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6993)Designing Environments (November 20\, 2026) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6994)Designing for Access (January 15\, 2027) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6995)Designing for Support (February 19\, 2027) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6996)Designing for Executive Function (March 19\, 2027) (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/6997)
