DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Lindsey Shorser\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science\, University of TorontoDescription:Even the most motivated students can feel discouraged\, distracted\, or disengaged from their courses when faced with overwhelming workloads\, a lack of connection to the course and its content\, or any number of other obstacles. As instructors\, we have the power to shape the learning environment in ways that not only re-engage these students but also sustain their motivation throughout the course. By early on\, we can create a classroom atmosphere where all students feel empowered to succeed. \nThis workshop will focus on practical ways to design courses and adopt teaching practices that foster both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Topics will include easy early wins\, encouraging good habits\, assessment feedback\, classroom culture\, and personalizing large courses to each students’ needs. Participants will develop their own strategies to help students connect with the material\, maintain focus\, and stay resilient in the face of challenges. Together\, we’ll explore how to design courses that inspire students to not just complete the work but to truly engage with their learning journey.Our faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI. SUMMARY:Designing Surveys in SoTL
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:   Yuxin Tu\, Senior Manager\, Evaluation & Assessment\, CTSIAmanda Brijmohan\, Educational Developer\, Assessment & Scholarship of Teaching and Learning\, Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre\, UTM This workshop is Part III in the 2024-25 SoTL Series and is jointly facilitated with CTSI and the RGASC at UTM. This session provides an introductory overview of design principles and data collection strategies for survey tools used in teaching and learning research.  We begin with a discussion on the strengths and limitations of surveys as a data collection tool relative to other methods\, including the types of research questions that surveys best address. We then provide an overview of how to design and assess survey questions\, including examples of how to adopt validated instruments/scales. Finally\, this workshop provides practical guidance for conducting surveys in SoTL settings\, particularly around eliciting responses.  The workshop will include breakout groups for participants to discuss their research ideas/questions and survey design considerations with their colleagues. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership.This session focuses on one of the key components of the teaching dossier: the opening Statement of Teaching Philosophy (STP). A strong statement summarizes and highlights the core beliefs and principles of an educator while also providing a conceptual framework for the dossier materials that follow. DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Nazanin Khazra\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Economics Liliana Clemenza\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Immunology Jessica A Hill\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Molecular Genetics Moderator: Victoria Sheldon\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Generative AI Pedagogies\, CTSI Join us for an insightful panel discussion that will delve into the innovative use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools that showcase how these technologies can enhance student engagement\, foster collaboration\, and redefine traditional notions of learning and critical thinking. Hear from instructors from Economics\, Immunology and Molecular Genetics who have experimented with the integration of GenAI in the design of assignments\, to support skill development and to enhance collaborative group work. Broad themes to be addressed include:  • Enhancing Student Engagement: Explore how GenAI tools can support active learning and collaboration among students and with the tools themselves. • Redefining Engagement: Understand how integrating GenAI into assignments can transform what engagement looks like in teaching and learning\, including fostering critical thinking\, facilitating peer-to-peer collaboration\, and acknowledging the limitations of these tools. • Supporting Scholarly Journeys: Learn how GenAI assignments can help students see themselves as junior scholars\, contributing to a broader body of knowledge and supporting their scholarly development.  The workshop will also emphasize the importance of developing AI literacy among students. We will discuss strategies to guide students through their apprehensions about using GenAI\, and how to ethically and effectively engage with these tools in their academic and future professional work. Join us to engage in this critical conversation and contribute to the evolving landscape of teaching and learning with GenAI.The GenAI Works in Progress Series: This is a CTSI/DLI programming effort designed to encourage an ongoing\, open institutional-level conversation about generative AI in teaching and learning and to create a space for experimentation\, sharing and problem-solving. These one-hour presentations will be targeted towards a broad teaching and learning audience where presenters can share current questions\, ideas\, inquiries or works in progress with a community of peers. Understanding that many of us are still in the early stages of navigating the realm of generative AI\, we want to emphasize that these sessions are not intended to showcase definitive answers or practices\, rather we are interested in the questions\, challenges and learning currently being explored.
