SUMMARY:ACUE Lunch and Learn – Motivation Matters: Inspiring Student Engagement through Course Design\, Feedback\, and Purposeful Teaching Practices
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Lindsey Shorser\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science\, University of TorontoDescription:Even the most motivated students can feel discouraged\, distracted\, or disengaged from their courses when faced with overwhelming workloads\, a lack of connection to the course and its content\, or any number of other obstacles. As instructors\, we have the power to shape the learning environment in ways that not only re-engage these students but also sustain their motivation throughout the course. By early on\, we can create a classroom atmosphere where all students feel empowered to succeed. \nThis workshop will focus on practical ways to design courses and adopt teaching practices that foster both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Topics will include easy early wins\, encouraging good habits\, assessment feedback\, classroom culture\, and personalizing large courses to each students’ needs. Participants will develop their own strategies to help students connect with the material\, maintain focus\, and stay resilient in the face of challenges. Together\, we’ll explore how to design courses that inspire students to not just complete the work but to truly engage with their learning journey. Our faculty facilitators in this lunch series have completed 25 modules and earned the Certificate in Effective University Instruction offered by the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) in partnership with CTSI. SUMMARY:GenAI Works in Progress: Embracing Experimentation with Generative AI in Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Moderator: Victoria Sheldon\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Generative AI Pedagogies\, CTSIPanelists: Sophia Bello\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, French\, Faculty of Arts & Science Danielle Goldfarb\, Senior Fellow\, Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy\, Lecturer\, Master of Global Affairs program Kenneth Yip\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Cell and Systems Biology\, Faculty of Arts & Science Join us for an engaging and interdisciplinary panel discussion focused on the theme of experimentation and fostering supportive environments for learning. Working with new\, challenging material can invoke anxiety in students\, hindering their ability to engage critically with material. As educators\, we often face the dual challenge of embracing innovative technologies while managing the anxiety that accompanies their adoption in the learning process. This workshop aims to shift the narrative from anxiety to curiosity\, encouraging students to foster a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation. Key Themes: Experimentation as a Learning Tool: Discover how adopting an experimental approach can transform the integration of Generative AI into your curriculum. Learn from faculty who have successfully navigated this journey\, sharing their experiences\, successes\, and lessons learned. Addressing Anxiety: Acknowledge and address the common anxieties associated with both new technology adoption and the ongoing process of learning Consider ways to support digital literacies\, while promoting a supportive environment for both educators and students. Iterative Learning: Emphasize the importance of iterative learning—experimenting\, reflecting\, and adjusting. Understand how this cycle can lead to more effective learning and innovative teaching practices. Collaborative Exploration: Engage in discussions about collaborative exploration\, where faculty and students work together to explore the potentials and limitations of generative AI. This collaborative spirit can enhance the learning experience and build a community of practice. During this panel\, participants will: • Explore practical strategies for integrating generative AI into your teaching from the teaching and learning community. • Consider techniques to manage and mitigate anxiety related to learning and new technology adoption. • Discuss insights into the iterative process of learning and adapting. Join us for an informal conversation designed to unpack the inherent anxieties that come with new technology adoption and inspire you to consider an experimental approach to teaching with generative AI.  The GenAI Works in Progress Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/teaching-uoft-genai/genai-programming/)  \nThis is a CTSI/DLI programming effort designed to encourage an ongoing\, open institutional-level conversation about generative AI in teaching and learning and to create a space for experimentation\, sharing and problem-solving. These one-hour presentations will be targeted towards a broad teaching and learning audience where presenters can share current questions\, ideas\, inquiries or works in progress with a community of peers. Understanding that many of us are still in the early stages of navigating the realm of generative AI\, we want to emphasize that these sessions are not intended to showcase definitive answers or practices\, rather we are interested in the questions\, challenges and learning currently being explored.

SUMMARY:Designing Surveys in SoTL
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:   Yuxin Tu\, Senior Manager\, Evaluation & Assessment\, CTSIAmanda Brijmohan\, Educational Developer\, Assessment & Scholarship of Teaching and Learning\, Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre\, UTM This workshop is Part III in the 2024-25 SoTL Series and is jointly facilitated with CTSI and the RGASC at UTM. This session provides an introductory overview of design principles and data collection strategies for survey tools used in teaching and learning research.  We begin with a discussion on the strengths and limitations of surveys as a data collection tool relative to other methods\, including the types of research questions that surveys best address. We then provide an overview of how to design and assess survey questions\, including examples of how to adopt validated instruments/scales. Finally\, this workshop provides practical guidance for conducting surveys in SoTL settings\, particularly around eliciting responses.  The workshop will include breakout groups for participants to discuss their research ideas/questions and survey design considerations with their colleagues. Although it’s not mandatory\, we invite participants to bring a working draft of survey questions that they feel comfortable sharing with colleagues.  By the end of this session\, participants will be able to: • Identify research questions that can be answered with surveys  \n• Identify types of surveys and variables which can be assessed with surveys  \n• Make informed choices on the use of appropriate survey instruments  \n• Design effective survey questions   \n• Disseminate surveys and collect data  \n *NOTE: In advance of this workshop\, you might consider developing your research on teaching questions or general topic area by checking out the October 17th webina (https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/ctsi-ea/ERyKXaQTmkNLmJPoxfW5yHgBt4cBGDpni36VMVbR0fNlMA?e=hBobex)r: (https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/ctsi-ea/ERyKXaQTmkNLmJPoxfW5yHgBt4cBGDpni36VMVbR0fNlMA?e=hBobex) Introduction to SoTL: From Curiosity to a Research Question. SUMMARY:Demystifying the Dossier: Drafting Your Statement of Teaching Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Cora McCloy\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, SoTL\, CTSISamantha Chang\, Faculty Liaison Coordinator\, Teaching\, Learning & Technology\, CTSIThis webinar is part of the Demystifying the Dossier Series (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/demystifying-the-dossier/). Faculty are welcome to attend one or multiple workshops in the series; recordings will be available for all sessions online (https://teaching.utoronto.ca/past-ctsi-workshop-recordings/).At the University of Toronto\, a teaching dossier must be submitted as part of the formal review process for tenure and continuing status. Beyond the information included in an academic CV\, a teaching dossier describes and documents an instructor’s teaching expertise\, goals and priorities for teaching and learning\, contributions to course and curriculum design efforts\, evidence of student impact\, and evidence of teaching leadership. This session focuses on one of the key components of the teaching dossier: the opening Statement of Teaching Philosophy (STP). A strong statement summarizes and highlights the core beliefs and principles of an educator while also providing a conceptual framework for the dossier materials that follow. It needs to provide enough information\, evidence\, and examples from your teaching to convey a vivid sense of the values and approaches of an instructor\, yet also needs to be clear and concise enough to be meaningful to the reader of the dossier.Participants in this workshop will: • Identify key elements of a STP• Review steps to follow when preparing to write the STP • Learn strategies to interpret\, connect\, and integrate sources of evidence (e.g.\, course evaluations\, mid-course feedback\, peer observations of teaching) • Practice articulating key aspects of their teaching and integrating evidence to support claims of effectiveness  The goal is for participants to leave the session with a clear sense of what steps to take to enhance their drafts. Participants will be provided a digital workbook prior to the webinar and this document will form the basis of the session activities. Please note that this session will not focus on how to prepare/compile the actual dossier itself—for this topic\, please register for Preparing the Teaching Dossier (https://ctsi.eve.utoronto.ca/home/events/5172).*** Optional pre-webinar work ***Consider reviewing the following CTSI asynchronous resources regarding Identifying and Articulating Teaching Success:• 7 Steps to Identifying and Articulating Teaching Success and Introduction to Educational Leadership Video (https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:v:/s/ctsi-PublicFiles/EUZUqtSl1sJGunfXVyE7oLAB94VlXubs5nrx1eTO3NUwWw?e=yYXpmo) (26:34)• 7 Steps to Identifying and Articulating Teaching Success and Introduction to Educational Leadership Slide Deck PDF (https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/ctsi-PublicFiles/EUsrG1lBSRlLrJ4alU32xR8BinYL4iGoW1e7GGF6PjLJDA)• Demystifying the Dossier Workbook PDF (https://utoronto.sharepoint.com/sites/ctsi-PublicFiles/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2Fctsi-PublicFiles%2FShared+Documents%2FCTSI+Workshops%2FCTSI+Dossier+Series%2FWorkbook_Identifying+and+Articulating+Teaching+Success.pdf&parent=%2Fsites%2Fctsi-PublicFiles%2FShared+Documents%2FCTSI+Workshops%2FCTSI+Dossier+Series&p=true&ct=1705501282391&or=OWA-NT&cid=58257e8b-753d-7f0f-4dfc-738a646dfc1a&ga=1)
