SUMMARY:Designing a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Project
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Susan McCahan\, Professor\, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering\, Vice Provost\, Academic Programs and Vice-Provost\, Innovations in Undergraduate EducationLisa Romkey\, Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, FASE \nIn this workshop participants will walk through the steps necessary to create a high-quality SoTL research study plan. The workshop utilizes a novel card deck developed by the facilitators. The cards include research questions\, exploration of theory and conceptual frameworks\, and an introduction to a range of methodologies. The concepts on the cards are introduced in the workshop and participants work together to construct a plan scaffolded by the cards. The “card game” consists of selecting and trading cards to create a research project. This approach not only ensures that the resulting research study has the necessary grounding in theory\, but also supports the development of a well-aligned plan. The cards introduce participants to many commonly used research paradigms\, conceptual frameworks and methodologies . The facilitators will introduce each step of the “card game” and actively work with the participants as they develop their plans. Participants can come with an idea already in mind or brainstorm ideas for a new direction in their SoTL work. \nThis workshop is open to instructors of all SoTL experience levels.

SUMMARY:Bridging Student Success: Supporting academic preparedness and belonging for first year Arts & Science students
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Alyssia Bueno\, Student Success Programs Officer\, FASScott Clark\, Associate Director\, Student Success Programs\, FASAdriana Caragea\, Assistant Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Cell and Systems Biology\, FAS  \nFirst year students enter the Faculty of Arts & Science with vastly different levels of preparedness for university studies related to subject area knowledge\, academic skills\, interpersonal skills and metacognitive skills to facilitate their success. These differences have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic inequities that can impact the access and persistence of students from historically marginalized communities in higher education. Over the past four years\, the Arts & Science Student Success Programs unit\, in partnership with A&S faculty members\, academic units and upper-year students\, has begun to address these concerns through Arrive Ready\, a series of summer academic preparation learning modules to support incoming first-year students. This session will draw on the learnings of Arrive Ready and will explore how course-specific academic skill-building interventions can be curated to support student learning gaps while enhancing a sense of belonging. This workshop will highlight the creation of a BIO130 Interactive Learning Module that was created in Fall 2022 in response to faculty concerns about the limited lab experience and skills possessed by first year students. In this interactive session\, participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their own teaching and learning contexts to identify skill gaps and discuss how educational resources and technology can be utilized to address these challenges and provide additional support to students within our diverse learning contexts.NOTE: there are additional questions when you click the REGISTER button. By understanding the theoretical foundations of anti-racist and anti-oppressive pedagogies\, we will unpack how we as educators can evolve our learning spaces and pedagogies to value students’ diverse experiences\, remove barriers\, nurture critical thinking skills and build community.  \nParticipants will learn how to apply pedagogical tools and approaches drawing from research on: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP)\, Anti-Racist Education\, Inclusive Education\, Pedagogy of Kindness and Metacognition to create learning experiences that support inclusion\, resiliency and empowerment for students.  \nLearning Outcomes: • Understand and recognize contemporary ideas and theoretical foundations underscoring the work of anti-oppressive/anti-racist teaching and learning practices  \n• Demystify how to create an anti-oppression classroom\, regardless of the subject matter of your course  \n• Discuss how identity impacts learning for students
