SUMMARY:Tune Into Teaching: Lesson Design Clinic - Design Lessons to Foster Academic Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Location: this session will be offered virtually (See MS Teams info available upon registration) \nFacilitators: Megan Burnett\, Associate Director\, CTSIMichal Kasprzak\, Assistant Director\, CTSI/TATP \nIn this practical online session\, participants will be introduced to a model of lesson design that presents a series of considerations that an instructor can use to structure any lesson in any discipline according to specific goals. Participants will identify possible learning activities that map to the different design considerations and specific attention will be paid to how to factor in academic resilience when designing a lesson – how can elements known to build resilience like metacognition\, resourcefulness and self-efficacy be integrated in the plans for a specific class or series of classes? The bulk of the clinic will involve participants working individually to complete a lesson plan for a specific class – the very first class of an upcoming course – and through small-group discussion\, they will receive feedback on their lesson plan from fellow participants and CTSI facilitators.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitators:  Kyle Turner\, MSc\, Faculty Liaison\, Teaching and Learning\, CTSIClarissa Lau\, PhD\, Data Analyst\, CTSIFaculty Presenter: Michelle Arnot\, Associate Professor\, Teaching Stream\, Pharmacology & ToxicologyThis session is part of the 2022 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) webinar series. It provides an overview of the practical design and use of surveys and related tools\, focusing on their use in collecting data relevant to teaching and learning. We begin with a discussion on the strengths (and limitations) of surveys relative to other methods\, including the types of research questions that surveys best address. We then provide an overview of designing and assessing survey questionnaires\, including adapting validated instruments/scales. Finally\, this webinar also provides practical guidance for conducting surveys in SoTL settings\, particularly around eliciting responses.The webinar will include opportunities to interact with other participants to discuss research ideas/questions and survey design considerations. Participants will have opportunities to learn and gain advice from facilitators and Dr. Michelle Arnot\, who will address key topics from recent survey work in teaching and learning throughout the session.
